The Amherst College Physics Department is searching for a tenure-track assistant professor in Physics, to begin July, 2011. The College seeks a physicist with broad intellectual interests and a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching and to research involving undergraduates. A Ph.D. degree in Physics or a closely related field is required. Preference will be given to candidates in experimental physics with postdoctoral research and teaching experience as well as to candidates whose research plans provide opportunities for on-site undergraduate participation. Start-up funds are available. Amherst College is a premiere, private liberal arts college with approximately 1,700 students. The College has a lively intellectual and cultural environment enhanced by the Five College Consortium (Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke, Smith and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst), which provides many opportunities for scholarly seminars and research collaborations. The department currently has six regular faculty members and two visiting faculty members. The research interests of faculty members include experimental tests of fundamental symmetries, the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates, the quantum behavior of nanomagnets and superconducting “qubits,” foundations of quantum mechanics, and theoretical high-energy physics. The Physics Department has excellent machine and electronics shops, as well as a skilled technical support staff.
