LEAD FACULTY POSITION

The University of Notre Dame seeks an entrepreneurially gifted leader to join the faculty of its Institute for Educational Initiatives (IEI) to develop a new initiative to promote excellence in science and math education. This initiative will serve as an organizing hub to explore ways in which Notre Dame can make a distinctive contribution in this critical area, engaging its faculty – including members of the IEI, College of Science, College of Engineering, and College of Arts and Letters – and faculty across the country to focus on improving K-20 science and math education for all students. The main goals of the initiative will likely include but not be limited to: (a) innovative research of teaching and learning in science and mathematics; (b) effective and sustained professional development for K-20 teachers of science and mathematics; and (c) establishing a clearinghouse of curricular, instructional, and assessment resources for science and math teachers in all educational contexts, but with an emphasis on serving under-resourced Catholic schools.

JOB DESCRIPTION and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Candidates should have strong disciplinary content knowledge in one or more disciplines of science or mathematics along with expertise in and a commitment to teacher education and professional development. Applicants must have earned a doctorate in either a science or math discipline or in an education related field. The successful applicant will have a record of scholarly activity; experience writing and securing grants; teaching experience at the K-12 and university level; administrative experience; a history of working collaboratively on research and professional development projects; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; and a commitment to a culture of continuous improvement.

Candidates should be prepared to provide leadership in the development and implementation of a vision for the Initiative and will assume responsibility for building collaborative and resource capacity, creating an infrastructure for future work, and developing short and long-term strategic plans for improving K-20 science and math education. The successful candidate will also display the capacity to manage an active program of research and external funding for the Initiative as well as to develop collaborations among institutions, businesses, and schools to create programs that will most effectively improve science and math education for students in the United States, particularly in under-resourced Catholic schools.

Candidates should also be prepared to teach in the teacher education M.Ed. program sponsored by the Alliance for Catholic Education (ACE). ACE Service Through Teaching is a two-year masters program that seeks to develop a corps of highly motivated and committed educators to meet the needs of our country’s most underserved elementary and secondary schools. The program annually places over 170 college graduates in over 100 parochial schools throughout the United States. Teaching responsibilities will likely include content methods courses and content-specific assessment courses. Other teaching opportunities through the interdisciplinary undergraduate minor, Education, Schooling, and Society, or through courtesy appointments in the College of Science or College of Arts and Letters will be encouraged.

Postdoctoral Research Scientist

The Graduate School of Education at Rutgers University seeks a postdoctoral research scientist in assessment and measurement. The postdoctoral fellow will join the research team of an NSF funded project to investigate the theoretical validity and practical implementation of learning progressions in science education. The project involves the development of assessments, and instructional materials to study two competing learning progressions in genetics at the high school level. The postdoctoral fellow will assist in the development and validation of multiple forms of assessments using the Evidence-Centered Design approach and multidimensional item response models. The successful candidate will be expected to become a full participant in the project (i.e. help organize research activities, collect and analyze data, present and publish articles that emerge from the research); as well as work with and assist in the mentorship of graduate and undergraduate students involved in the project.

Qualifications: PhD in assessment and measurement or related field at time of appointment. The ideal candidate will have expertise/experience in: (a) analysis of measurement data (expertise in IRT preferred), and b) development of assessments (expertise with the BEAR Assessment System preferred). Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with K-12 teachers and students are essential. The ideal candidate will be flexible, reliable and organized, with excellent oral and written communication skills. The candidate must be able to work independently as well as be collaborative and participate cooperatively in close-knit research team.

Salary: Commensurate with candidate experience

Promoting Science Learning among English Language Learners (PSELL) Scale-Up project

The post-doctoral scholar will work closely with an interdisciplinary team funded by the National Science Foundation to test the effectiveness of scaling-up a model of an innovation designed to improve science achievement of all students, especially English language learners, in urban and rural elementary schools.

Responsibilities: The scholar will work closely with the project team (Okhee Lee, Lorena Llosa and Susan Kirch) to implement the project work plan. In the first year, the scholar will establish relationships with the participating school districts in Florida and work with them to revise and finalize the curriculum to ensure that it aligns with Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in Science. In subsequent years, the scholar will collaborate with school district teams to design, plan and deliver teacher workshops on the curriculum content and implementation; she/he will participate in designing and implementing research and evaluation tasks; and he/she will collaborate with the research team on disseminating research results in journal articles and professional conference presentations. Compensated air travel between New York and Florida is required throughout the project period.

Qualifications: Applicants should have a doctoral degree in science education or related fields and a background in the natural sciences. Preference will be given to candidates with at least two years of K-12 teaching experience and/or experience as a teacher educator. The Department of Curriculum, Instruction & Special Education (CISE) at the University of Virginia, Curry School of Education is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in Science Education for an independent research opportunity working on an NSF-funded research grant entitled "Mixed-Reality Labs: Integrating Sensors and Simulations to Improve Learning". The grant will develop, implement and assess secondary science lab activities that bridge visualizations and hands-on experiences.

Both projects include assessment design, prototype development, online pilot administration, analysis, and reporting of research results.

BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Be part of a cross-functional team of research scientists, test developers, psychometricians, and technology specialists who will adapt the philosophy and design principles governing the CBAL project to explore how they might be applied to NAEP.

Contribute to the development of a CBAL science competency model and a set of learning progressions to underlie the design of CBAL science summative and formative assessments for secondary school, and to the potential application and adaptation of that competency model for NAEP.

Design NAEP science assessment prototypes and CBAL summative and formative science assessment prototypes, create specifications for item developers, and contribute to item writing, as appropriate.

Create a research agenda to address significant issues related to the implementation of NAEP and CBAL science assessments.

Write proposals for internal and external funding to carry out projects in response to the research agenda.

Disseminate theoretical work and empirical findings through frequent presentations at national and international conferences, and through peer-reviewed publications.

Work with the NAEP and with CBAL science team members and other staff to meet project goals and objectives.

The science education literacy position will join a cluster of
scholars focused on the role of language, literacy, and text in
disciplinary learning. The successful candidate will share an interest
in the study and teaching of how language and literacy contribute to
knowledge production and representation in science. This work may
include, for example, research on science literacy and text; reading
and writing processes, inscriptions, representations and models,
argumentation and science education; science education and ELL;
discourse in science; and/or scaffolding in written or online science
education resources.

One important component of these positions focuses on graduate
education. Candidates should be ready to occupy a key position in the
science education unit within Educational Studies in the School of
Education. Work at the graduate level will include, in concert with
other faculty, teaching seminars in which science education students

Prospective faculty members should be prepared to teach science
teacher education courses and oversee field instruction in the

STEM Education Project Coordinator at CSU San Marcos

The PhET Interactive Simulations Project at the University of Colorado at Boulder has TWO postdoctoral positions available – one targeting general chemistry content at the high school and college level, and the other targeting math content at the middle school level.

The PhET Team develops interactive simulations for teaching and learning science and math, creates activities that couple with the simulations, and makes all of these resources freely available to educators and students on the web. Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years, beginning with the fall semester of 2012, and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor.

We seek a specialist in computational physics, broadly conceived. The incumbent will teach a wide range of undergraduate physics courses (at the standard teaching load on campus) for both science and non-science majors and will develop an on-campus research program involving undergraduates. We expect that this person will contribute to an active cross-departmental modeling initiative. The College possesses a 140-processor, 64-bit Beowulf cluster that is available on an internally competed basis, and we have access to the Ohio Supercomputer Center.

Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D. degree in physics or a closely allied field such as geophysics, atmospheric physics, materials science, biophysics, or engineering physics. Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Post-doctoral research experience is desirable. He or she will also be expected to participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising, service on committees, and sustained scholarly research.

The Physics and Astronomy Department, with an authorized faculty size of 7.5 FTE, graduates about 12 majors annually, including concentrators in astrophysics and materials physics. Current faculty research interests include atomic physics, astrophysics, semiconductor device physics, energy efficiency of buildings, magnetic materials, theoretical quantal chaos, and hydrogen storage in lattices.
