TT, Oglethorpe University, Atlanta GA

Oglethorpe University welcomes applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Physics, starting Fall 2021. A Ph.D. in Physics, earned by August 2021, is required.

Faculty at Oglethorpe prioritize teaching and mentoring, and the successful candidate must demonstrate high potential to succeed on both fronts with our diverse student body. A commitment to the craft of teaching, including the use of evidence-based innovative pedagogy and involvement in scholarly activities to promote student education is expected.  The teaching load for this position is two courses with labs, or the equivalent, per semester. The chosen candidate will teach, in rotation, algebra-based and calculus-based introductory physics as well as upper-division courses and electives that support the Physics and Dual-Degree Engineering programs.  In addition, the successful candidate will regularly contribute to Oglethorpe’s signature liberal arts general education program, the Core.

The successful candidate will establish and maintain a research program that engages undergraduate students. Oglethorpe faculty are expected to contribute to their field through peer-reviewed work and to have an active and on-going scholarly agenda.  Successful faculty remain current in their discipline and expand their expertise by attending seminars, conferences, and workshops. Oglethorpe faculty also mentor students as academic advisors, research advisors, and in informal settings. Candidates with expertise in a subfield of Physics that can interface with our existing programs in the natural sciences, computer science, and/or mathematics are highly desirable, as are those applicants that can work across disciplines to develop multidisciplinary courses or courses in areas of entrepreneurship as it relates to Physics.

The Physics program is housed in the Cousins Center, which has been thoughtfully designed to promote student-faculty interactions in research, study, and teaching spaces.  Opened in 2019, the Cousins Center opens a new era of innovation, reinvigoration, and growth for the Science Division. Housing both the sciences and the Hammack School of Business, the Cousins Center’s design encourages collaboration in flexible laboratories, classrooms, and group meeting spaces.

Founded in 1835, Oglethorpe is Atlanta’s leading liberal arts and sciences university, located within the limits of this diverse and dynamic city.  Our student body of approximately 1400 students represents about 30 states and over 20 countries, and over half identify as non-white.  Approximately one-third of Oglethorpe students are first-generation college students.  Oglethorpe is ranked in the top 15% of many polls and rankings of US colleges for diversity in metrics such as ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender identity, disabilities, and geographic origin.  Assured in the belief that diversity and equity are key to Oglethorpe’s success, both the strategic plan and EEOC statement confirm an institutional desire for our employees to reflect the diversity of our student body and the wider Atlanta community we serve.
