The Department of Physics at Tennessee Tech University invites applications for two full-time, one-year, non-tenure track Instructor positions to begin August 2024. Appointees will teach introductory calculus- and algebra-based physics courses, including lectures, laboratories, and integrated studio-style classes. This would be a good opportunity for recent graduates and postdocs interested in academic positions to gain some experience with evidence-based teaching strategies.  Opportunities for research may be possible. The department also anticipates searching for at least one longer term appointment in the near future, for which successful candidates may be eligible to apply. A masters degree in physics or a related area is required; a Ph.D. is preferred. The Opportunity

The Physics Department at the Colorado School of Mines (Mines) invites applications for a teaching assistant professor to participate in the delivery of our introductory sequence and core curriculum. The Department of Physics offers an ABET-accredited undergraduate degree in Engineering Physics, as well as MS and PhD degrees. The program typically graduates between 50 and 70 majors per year. The department encourages and supports innovation in teaching and learning and has developed effective methods of instruction at the introductory and advanced levels. The successful candidate will become part of the departmental faculty team, which currently consists of seven full-time teaching faculty and seventeen tenure/tenure-track faculty. The teaching faculty team has primary responsibility for delivering the two-semester introductory calculus-based physics sequence using a hybrid-studio approach, and is also invited to deliver courses in the undergraduate and graduate physics core curricula. We are looking for the successful candidate to start in August 2024. Appointment at a higher rank (Teaching Associate Professor or Teaching Professor) may be possible for an exceptionally qualified individual.
 

Responsibilities

In the introductory studio, faculty work with graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants to coach students through a combination of hands-on activities, problem-solving practice, and other computer-assisted lessons. In addition, the successful candidate will contribute to other parts of the Engineering Physics undergraduate and (Applied) Physics graduate core curriculum. Other responsibilities include training and supervising teaching assistants, departmental and campus committee service, and advising.
 

Minimum Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree in physics or a related field earned by August 2024.

  • Strong commitment to undergraduate education, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as a member of a teaching team.

  • A thorough understanding of modern, research-based educational practices.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience with the delivery of physics courses in the introductory sequence and in the core curriculum at the undergraduate and graduate levels using modern, research-vetted teaching practices.

  • Demonstrated potential for and interest in teaching upper-division undergraduate lab courses.

Pay Range

Mines is offering an academic year salary rate of:

Teaching Assistant Professor: $72,500 - $80,000
Teaching Associate Professor: $86,500 - $92,750
Teaching Professor: $95,500 - $108,000

Full-Time Non-Tenure Track Lecturer, DePaul University, Chicago

The Physics department at DePaul University has an opening for a full time non-tenure track professional lecturer in a studio environment.. The position requires a PhD in physics or related field. The initial contract is for 1 year, with the possibility of future multi-year contracts. The primary responsibility of this position is teaching the algebra based introductory physics for the life sciences (IPLS) course. There is also the possibility to develop and teach courses for the general education program, including courses that have a strong emphasis on the nature of science as well as teaching advanced majors courses.   The ideal candidate will have experience using active engagement pedagogies with strong preference given to candidates who have studio physics experience in a scale-up classroom.  Candidates with a strong and genuine interest, but limited experience in applying research-based teaching methods in IPLS courses are also encouraged to apply. Lecturers at UNE have teaching intensive, 9-month academic year appointments. They are eligible for promotion to Associate and Senior Lecturer, contingent on successful passage of formal reviews. Lecturers are full voting members of the College of Arts and Sciences Faculty Assembly.
Facilities and Equipment
The Department of Chemistry and Physics is located primarily in Morgane Hall which houses two state-of-the-art studio physics labs each with a capacity of 24 students. Each lab has eight stations – three students/computer, Vernier LabPro interfaces, a range of probes, and LoggerPro software.
Faculty
The Department of Chemistry and Physics has an energetic faculty actively engaged in teaching, program development, and undergraduate research. The department includes one tenured physics faculty position and two physics lecturers as well as seven tenure-track positions in chemistry and biochemistry, five chemistry lecturers, two laboratory assistants and a chemical hygiene officer / purchasing assistant. The physics faculty specializes in atomic force microscopy/nanotechnology and physics education research; current chemistry faculty members specialize in analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic/medicinal chemistry, physical organic/photochemistry, and physical chemistry/computational chemistry. Responsibilities
The primary teaching responsibility includes the year-long General Physics introductory sequence taught in a student-centered studio physics setting. The Department teaches many life and health science majors, and seeks to connect relevant biological content to a physics foundation of mechanics, electricity and magnetism, fluids, and waves. The current studio physics courses use modeling physics instruction with activities adapted and implemented for an “Introductory Physics for the Life Sciences” (IPLS) approach. The individual may occasionally teach advanced courses in the Biophysics Minor.
In addition to teaching, the Lecturer is expected to participate in curriculum development, academic advising, recruiting, program assessment, and service to the department, college, and university.
Qualifications
The Department seeks candidates with a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates and who will become an actively engaged member of the Department and University community. A minimum of a Master’s degree in Physics or a closely-related field is required by the time of appointment. Individuals with a Ph.D. in physics education research, and/or experience or training in guided inquiry techniques are especially encouraged to apply. Candidates with backgrounds in either biophysics or medical physics are highly desirable.

    TECHNICAL INSTRUCTOR, Physics, to serve as an instructor/tutor for undergraduate studio physics courses and provide demonstration support for large lecture classes. Will work as part of a small team that coordinates with faculty and class administrators. Key responsibilities include system administration in active learning classrooms and database management.
