The Physical Science Laboratory Supervisor position is responsible for ensuring that all of the necessary supplies and equipment are maintained, prepared and in place for the Astronomy, Geology, and Physics labs on a weekly basis, maintaining accurate records and participating in laboratory course curriculum development. The position will maintain, revise, and provide as needed a procedures manual regarding lab policies and procedures and supplementary lab materials for full and part-time laboratory instructors. This position will maintain a comprehensive collection of up-to-date material safety data sheets (MSDS) for all chemicals in area of responsibility, maintain a comprehensive Astronomy, Geology, and Physics inventory using database program, and follow established procedures for instrumentation/equipment usage. This position prepares the schedule for all Astronomy, Geology, and Physics lab sections each term. The Physical Sciences Laboratory Supervisor position is also responsible for teaching 2-3 courses (6-9 course workload hours) per semester and for providing related student support. The position also performs other duties as assigned.  
Experience
A minimum of one (1) year of full-time (or equivalent) experience teaching college level Astronomy, Geology, or Physics laboratory courses is required. Full-time college teaching experience in Astronomy, Geology, or Physics lecture and laboratory courses is preferred.A combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.  
Education
A minimum of a Master's degree with at least 18 semester or 27 quarter graduate hours in Astronomy, Geology, or Physics or a closely related science or applicable Engineering discipline is required. Doctorate is preferred. 
Candidate must be SACS qualified to teach Physical Sciences courses and laboratory courses offered at GPC.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Must be knowledgeable in the safe handling of Astronomy, Geology, and Physics instrumentation/equipment and of current laboratory safety practice and procedures.
  • Excellent organizational skills are required to maintain supply inventory and laboratory equipment, work within the department budget and produce, revise, and maintain appropriate records, such as accurate laboratory protocols for preparation and teaching materials, experiments and procedures.
  • Must be able to effectively work with the department Chair, Science Faculty, and Staff, including supervising laboratory assistants.
  • Effective computer skills and use of teaching and laboratory technology is required.  
Physical Requirements:
Position requires local travel. Ability to lift and carry materials. Ability to move from one office to another office on campus. Adequate hand-eye coordination to use complex lab equipment in a safe and accurate manner is required. Adequate vision, hearing, and manual dexterity to interact with people in person, on the phone, and in writing. Job takes place in normal laboratory or office environmental conditions.

1. College level coursework in Physics plus three years of technical and craft experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Under general supervision of the Instructional Lab Manager (Associate Development Engineer), perform physics laboratory and/or lecture demonstration assemblies, installations, calibrations and tests. Repair and maintain instructional equipment. Assist in the design, fabrication, assembly and testing of new equipment. Store equipment when not in use. Order supplies and replacement equipment. Maintain records of laboratory exercises and equipment manuals. Operate audio/visual equipment and perform photographic services for the department. Perform routine laboratory maintenance. Perform departmental receiving function. Assist with laboratory and office moves. Serve as a member of the Building Emergency Staff team. Perform other related duties as assigned insupport of instruction and research.
