Description

Position Overview:

The Instructional Laboratories Manager (ILM) collaborates with the Director of Instructional Laboratories (DIL) and physics faculty members to design (or re-design) instructional physics labs and to supervise the implementation of lower-level physics laboratories. The ILM coordinates with the DIL and the Advanced Laboratories Manager (ALM) in the management, setup, and take-down of lower-level labs.  This position provides technical support for lower-level physics labs, including PHYS 101, PHYS 104, PHYS 105, PHYS 111, PHYS 112, PHYS 211L, PHYS 212L, plus PHYS 309L. In conjunction with the DIL and the COAS System Administrator, the ILM is responsible for installation and maintenance of information technology hardware and software used in instructional laboratories; this includes printers, projectors, computers, and their peripherals. The organization and maintenance of lecture demonstration equipment as well as collaboration in designing and finding new equipment with faculty are also managed by this position, in addition to the management of the physics department stockroom and other general storage spaces.  The ILM supervises several student employees to carry out the actual setup and takedown of instructional physics laboratories.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Coordinate operations of instructional labs and train instructors:
Manage the setup, check operation, and take down apparatus for the upper-level labs
Supervise part-time student employees to do the same for the introductory labs
Conduct training sessions to show instructors and assistants how to use the equipment
Coordinate lecture demonstrations:
Manage and schedule demonstration activities in consultation with instructors
Lead demonstration training sessions for instructors and assistants
Maintain equipment, update software, and recommend purchases:
Carry out routine maintenance of laboratory and demonstration equipment
Arrange the repair of broken equipment by the Scientific Instrumentation Shop
Make or supervise software updates for the laboratory computers
Recommend purchases of new equipment and computer software
Organize workspaces, keep inventories, and maintain supplies:
Organize and maintain the stockroom plus all instructional lab and demonstration areas
Set up and maintain a web-accessible directory of demonstrations, experiments, and equipment available in the department according to Physics Instructional Resource Agent (PIRA) standards
Keep the department equipment inventory
Coordinate equipment checkout and return
Order new consumable materials such as batteries and chemicals as needed
Design and construct additional apparatus as requested by faculty
Directly supervise any assistants using machinery for this purpose
Work with the Scientific Instrumentation Shop for sophisticated apparatus

Job Description Teaching/Advising (.65 FTE)
Teaches a minimum of two courses per semester (fall, spring, and summer sessions); participates in curriculum development efforts.
Develops and updates syllabi, study guides, instructor’s guides, test questions, tests, and web-based material. Participates in regular meetings of departmental instructors. Implements the use of technology in the teaching of courses.
Holds regular office hours for students involved in classes taught.
Manages the department’s demonstration equipment and supervises the students responsible for daily delivery to classrooms.
Adheres to department, College and university policies and procedures.

Professional Performance (.15 FTE)
Works closely with the department’s administration and faculty to develop and implement curriculum changes.  This includes partnering with faculty members to teach and implement mechanisms for improving student learning, engagement, and retention in large introductory courses.
Assists with training, supervision and evaluation of department’s teaching assistants.

Research (.10 FTE)
The specialist will contribute to the research mission of the Department of Physics & Astronomy, primarily in the area of Physics Education and Pedagogy, through presentations at professional conferences and publication of works in books, articles, abstracts, or other scholarly works such as the online publication of new active-learning materials in online formats.
Possible areas of focus for publications and presentations include the scholarship of assessment and curriculum design, the development of new undergraduate laboratories and/or new teaching methods,  supervision and evaluation of undergraduate research in the specialist’s area of research expertise, methods to enhance online course resources outside of class time and use of active learning activities to maximize concept mastery during face-to-face class and laboratory time, development of programs and courses that feature research-based instructional practices (included but not limited to inquiry and discovery based instruction, student-centered instruction, peer-mentoring, and the integration of technology into the classroom).

Service (.10 FTE)
Member of the department’s undergraduate committee, and other committees as appropriate.
Serves as the lead advisor for department’s undergraduate majors.
Participates in appropriate professional activities.

Postdoc at MIT

Participate in a program to make topical assessments for Introductory Physics, administer them to a variety of students, and use psychometrics to provide students and teachers detailed formative/summative assessments with resolution down to the topic and learning objective level. These will be administered online (using the open source edX.org platform) in blended courses – both at MIT and in high schools with a majority of underrepresented minority students, and freely to physics teachers. The major responsibility of the research associate will be to collect, write, administer, and help our psychometrician understand the data. This job will include performing experimental/control group experiments to research which instructional resources teach which topics & learning objectives best. Our long term goal is to understand which resources and what learning habits improve student learning of both specific skills and overall expertise. This work will benefit from the RELATE group’s expertise in educational data mining, advanced psychometrics including multi­dimensional item response theory, and experience in designing online experiments. This is a one-year, full-time leave replacement faculty position, beginning Fall Semester (August 2016).  This assignment is temporary in nature and does not constitute "contract" or "tenure-track status."  Instead, the assignment is temporary in nature pursuant to Education Code 87482.  Please be aware that temporary faculty members may only work in excess of 67% two out of six semesters.  A faculty member who has served as a leave replacement during the 2014-2015 or 2015-2016 academic years will not qualify for this one-year leave replacement assignment.

This position works a 175-day faculty work year, to be worked in accordance with the district/faculty agreement.  Appointments are contingent upon approval of the college's Board of Trustees.  The salary range for the 2016-2017 academic year is $54,429-$63,280.  Placement on the salary range is commensurate with education and experience.  Medical benefits available.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under direction of the Vice President of Instruction, Dean of Math, Science and Letters, and chair of the Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Division:

Teach all levels of physics;
Participate in the development and revision of curriculum, program evaluation, and the assessment of student learning outcomes;
Assist the division chair and dean in program development and other division tasks;
Participate in professional development activities;
Oversee access and maintenance of the physics Maker Lab;
Maintain current knowledge in the subject-matter area and effective teaching/learning strategies;
work cooperatively with the MESA (Math Engineering Science Achievement) Program;
Work cooperatively with other department members, the division chair, the dean, and the vice president to develop and maintain quality instruction; and
Perform related duties in the Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Division, as assigned.
Assignment may include a combination of day, evening, weekend, off-campus classes, and online or other technology-supported instruction.  All faculty are required to adhere to contractual obligations, meet assigned classes, maintain regular office hours, assist and advise students, participate in division activities and appropriate college committees, including regular faculty meetings of the department, division and College.

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Earned Master's degree in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics OR
Bachelor's in physics or astronomy AND Master's in engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics OR
The equivalent.If you do not possess the stated minimum educational qualifications as stated in #1 or #2 above and are seeking consideration on the basis of equivalency, a Request for Equivalency Review form must be submitted at the time of application.
All degrees must be from an accredited institution.

Experience:
Demonstrated college-level teaching experience in physics; and

One year of full-time or two years of part-time college teaching experience in physics, preferably at the community college level;
Demonstrated experience in developing and revising curriculum;

Demonstrated experience in using current information technology in the classroom;
Demonstrated experience in assessing student learning outcomes;

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Lab Manager at Washington University St Louis

The laboratory manager supports the teaching faculty in the introductory calculus-based physics sequences. This permanent, full time (12 month), technical staff position entails: training and instructing graduate students in teaching and overseeing them on a day-to-day basis; teaching undergraduates in introductory physics lab; collaborating with the course instructors to design, test, and implement new experiments utilizing current physics pedagogy; setting up and taking down laboratory equipment; facilitating the day-to-day operation of the introductory labs; and other activities related to the introductory physics laboratory program. The lab manager must be able to work and think independently in developing and implementing all aspects of the introductory physics lab.

  • Train graduate student teaching assistants in how to interact with students non-traditional inquiry-based lab experiments.  In particular, training occurs in a multi-day session at the start of the semester, and then during periodic group sessions and one-on-one meetings throughout the semester. 
  • Manage graduate student TAs on a day-to-day basis throughout the semester, by periodically observing and discussing their teaching practices; monitoring the consistency and timeliness of their grading; and intervening when necessary to discuss and resolve the issues with the TA. 
  • Teach and grade 2-3 introductory physics lab sections (containing roughly 28 students each).
  • Continue curriculum development to update the experiments and apply the most current physics pedagogies to improve student learning, engage students in the material, and spark their curiosity.
  • Administrative duties, including purchasing supplies, setting lab schedules, website maintenance, creating Blackboard pages and weekly lab quizzes, controlling books and keys, assist with determining final lab grades.
  • Set-up and take down laboratory experiments. Due to logistics of changing to a new experiment, this will require some non-standard work hours, including early morning or weekend work.
  • Lab equipment maintenance to ensure it remains in good working order.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

THE DEPARTMENT:
The Department of Physics offers both Bachelor’s of Arts and Bachelor’s of Science degrees. With relatively small classes (approximately 10-15 students per upper division class) and emphasis on teaching, students obtain a considerable amount of individual instruction. The department has a rigorous curriculum that places a special emphasis on hands-on laboratory work.  Upper division students take advanced laboratory courses, concentrating on high-level experimental setups which provide experience in electronics and computational physics within the laboratory setting.  All of our students are encouraged to participate in research with faculty members, and we have developed state-of-the-art research laboratories in atomic, condensed matter physics and high-energy astrophysics. On-site research facilities available to students include an optical frequency comb laboratory, THz spectrometer, and a world-class atomic magnetometer.  The students also benefit from access to astrophysical data from NASA’s Fermi Large Area Telescope and the VERITAS ground-based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope, located in Tucson, Arizona.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION:
The successful candidate must be able to teach a full range of physics courses for both majors and non-majors. The candidate will be expected to contribute to revising curriculum and developing new courses for both majors and non-majors. Candidates working in astrophysics are especially encouraged to apply, although all areas of specialization will be considered. 
Aside from teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate is expected to develop an active research program, including submitting proposals to obtain extramural funds. It is expected that these research activities will include participation of undergraduate students.
The University is home to the Institute for STEM Education, which coordinates numerous professional development programs to support CSUEB science majors, outreach to K-12 students in the local community, and efforts to train current and future K-12 STEM educators. Posting Text: Dakota State University is accepting applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Physics beginning Fall 2016. Minimum qualifications are a Master's degree in physics or related field. Teaching will include Introduction to Physics I and II, University Physics I and II, Introduction to Modern Physics, labs as appropriate, and other courses as needed.

Job Description:
Farmingdale State College invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor in Physics. The position requires a full teaching load in physics and physical science; research leading to publications in peer-reviewed journals; duties in student advisement; curriculum development; and department and college-wide service activities. Excellent communications skills and superb interpersonal skills are imperative.

All faculty members at Farmingdale State College have three workload components: teaching, research and scholarly activity, and service. Service includes advising students as well as serving on departmental and college wide committees. The successful candidate will demonstrate an interest and high level of competence in teaching. Candidates should have a research agenda that complements their area of academic specialty and has the potential for peer-reviewed publications and presentations, both of which are necessary for promotion and tenure at Farmingdale State College.


Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Physics or closely related field.   Minimum of 1 year experience teaching undergraduate physics or two years as a teaching assistant, demonstrated record of scholarship in Physics.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Demonstrated ability to involve undergraduate students in research. Experience teaching Physical Science in a college or university.


Additional Information:
This is a full-time, 10 month faculty position.

The Carleton College Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level, to start September 1, 2017. We seek an astronomer or astrophysicist with a strong commitment to teaching undergraduates in a liberal arts environment and the ability to contribute imaginatively to our curriculum and our observational astronomy program.
