Whittier College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant
Professor position in Experimental Physics & Electrical/Electronics
Engineering within the Department of Physics and Astronomy starting
September 2017.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Experimental Physics with a strong
background in electronics, or a Ph.D. in Electrical/Electronics
Engineering with a strong background in physics (ABD considered).
Excellence in teaching as well as active research involving
undergraduates is essential. The successful candidate should be able to
teach introductory physics courses, modern physics, an electronics
course emphasizing circuit design and computer logic, in addition to
other upper-level courses. A willingness to teach interdisciplinary
courses such as Science and Society or Freshman Writing is also highly
desirable. Candidates will be judged primarily on their teaching ability
and their dedication to close interaction with undergraduates. Student
advising and committee work are also expected. The successful candidate
will participate in establishing a new interdisciplinary Computer
Science major, and will have an office and laboratory space in the brand
new Science and Learning Center.

Illinois College invites applications for a one-year visiting assistant professor position (with the possibility of extension for an additional year) to begin in Fall 2017, in Physics.
The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. (or ABD) in Physics or a related discipline and will be committed to undergraduate instruction in a liberal arts setting. Teaching responsibilities will include a two-semester General Physics course sequence, Electric Circuits, and the Dynamics semester of an introductory mechanical engineering course sequence for 3-2 engineering students. An interest in teaching an astronomy course for majors and/or non-science majors is desirable but not essential. Scholarly engagement in the discipline is encouraged, and funding is available for travel and professional development. Opportunities and support exist for student-faculty research.

Qualifications: Preferably, applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Physics or closely related discipline; however, well-qualified individuals with a M. S. will also be considered. The successful candidate will have substantial experimental/hardware experience. The applicants are expected to have excellent academic credentials and a proven ability to teach courses and laboratory sessions effectively, maintaining strong student-faculty interaction.
The new hire will be expected to be able to teach undergraduate Physics, including general education, lower- and upper-division physics, as well as, electrical circuits, basic electronics including the associated laboratories. The successful applicant will also be able to teach general education physics-related courses, as well as physics for teachers in training.
Department/School: The Department of Physics and Engineering is one of seven departments in the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering. It currently offers a BS in Physics, a BS in Engineering Sciences, a BA in Natural Sciences (intended for prospective High School teachers), and a Pre-engineering program. The department is very active in peer-reviewed research and encourages work involving undergraduates.
Facilities: The department moved into a new, three-story building in 2008/09 which it shares with the Mathematics and Computer and Electrical Engineering, and Computer Sciences departments. It maintains six physics and engineering teaching laboratories.
University and Community: California State University, Bakersfield, founded in 1970, is one of twenty-three campuses of the CSU System and currently has an enrollment of 8,500 students. We are a regional comprehensive university that prides itself in undergraduate education and small, high-quality programs.
