Two VAP at Whitman College

Whitman College invites applications for two one-year sabbatical replacement positions at the rank of assistant professor. Effective August, 2010. The University of Arizona seeks to fill a tenured/tenure-track position in the College of Science Teacher Preparation Program (CoS TPP). This hire will continue the growth of the program, which is an interdisciplinary undergraduate program specifically designed to prepare science majors to be successful middle and secondary teachers. Faculty members in the program teach science pedagogy courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels and maintain an active research program in initial teacher preparation. Qualifications

Duties & Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities associated with this position are in initial science teacher preparation, and include teaching courses in the CoS TPP, advising preservice science teachers, conducting scholarly research in initial science teacher preparation, and contributing to the continuing development of the program.
Secondary responsibilities are related to involvement in the appropriate content department and may include teaching content courses, conducting science education or science research, and contributing to content course reform and development.

We are seeking a theorist or an experimentalist whose research will complement existing research done by the faculty. Physics Lecturer at Wake Forest University

APS Congressional Science Fellowship 2010-2011

The American Physical Society is currently accepting applications for the Congressional Science Fellowship Program. Fellows serve one year on the staff of a senator, representative or congressional committee. They are afforded an opportunity to learn the legislative process and explore science policy issues from the lawmakers' perspective. In turn, Fellows have the opportunity to lend scientific and technical expertise to public policy issues.

Qualifications include a PhD or equivalent in physics or a closely related field, a strong interest in science and technology policy and, ideally, some experience in applying scientific knowledge toward the solution of societal problems. Fellows are required to be U.S. citizens and members of the APS.

Term of Appointment is one year, beginning in September of 2010 with participation in a two week orientation sponsored by AAAS. Fellows have considerable choice in congressional assignments.

A stipend is offered in addition to allowances for relocation, in-service travel, and health insurance premiums.

Job Description:
The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of
Massachusetts/Boston is seeking a professor in Science Education. This
open-rank position will begin in the Fall of 2010. The position will
be based in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. The faculty
member will also be a core faculty fellow of the Center of Science and
Math in Context (COSMIC), which is a research center operated jointly
by the Graduate College of Education and the College of Science and
Mathematics. UMass/Boston is an urban institution with opportunities
for collaboration within the university and across a network of
schools and community settings serving diverse populations. We seek
candidates who share our commitment to providing high quality,
culturally responsive science education for all students, especially
those in urban settings. We also seek candidates who have substantial
K-12 classroom/school based experience in urban schools, with a
significant portion at the elementary level. This science educator

Postdoc with Center for Astronomy Education at U of Arizona

The Center for Astronomy Education (CAE) & the Collaboration of Astronomy Teaching Scholars (CATS) Postdoctoral Fellowship in Astronomy Education Research

Applications are invited for a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship position in space-science education with the Center for Astronomy Education (CAE) at the University of Arizona, Department of Astronomy, Steward Observatory. The position will begin Summer 2010. The successful candidate will divide their time between working on several research projects underway through the NSF-funded Collaboration of Astronomy Teaching Scholars (CATS) program. The members of CAE and the CATS program provide a national collaborative of faculty, post-docs, grad students and undergrads working together to find solutions to fundamental questions regarding teaching and learning of space science. The successful candidate to this search would have the opportunity to collaborate with several members of this highly interactive research community.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a space-science related field (i.e. astronomy or physics). It is preferred that the candidate have prior teaching experience with college non-science majors, particularly in introductory astronomy/physics courses.

The candidate will be involved in developing a strong program of education research into how college non-science majors change in their understanding of astronomy content and in their attitudes and beliefs about science. Two postdocs at Texas Tech

Texas Tech has an immediate need for two post doctoral researchers. They have been awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Challenge Grant for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education. The project is to rigorously assess the following:

1) The introduction of research-based laboratories and teaching pedagogies into the curriculum.
2) Teaching assistant training in the new pedagogies and the development and use of grading rubrics.
3) The integration of the lecture and lab, using the new research-based laboratories and pedagogies.
4) A completely laboratory-based, interactive engagement course taught to students in small sections.

The focus is the introductory algebra-based course, aimed at health science majors, but we will also be assessing our large calculus-based courses.

San Francisco State University has created a Center for Science and Mathematics Education to recruit and support new science and mathematics teachers, foster educational research, and develop a K-18+ community of educators.
