3-yr Renewable VAP at University of Arkansas

The Physics Department at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, is looking for a person committed to undergraduate physics teaching to fill a Visiting Assistant Professor position. This is a 3-year renewable appointment, with a 9-month base salary of $32K/year; the possibility also exists of teaching summer courses and/or online courses for extra compensation.

This is paraprofessional work at the action level that involves assisting Physics and Mathematics faculty in the delivery of classroom instruction, and providing academic support to students. Under direction, the employee performs a variety of preparatory work and planning, and at the faculty direction prepares materials for use in the classroom, organizes study groups in physics, mathematics, and other STEM courses, and supervises the work of tutors and student assistants in STEM courses. Duties and Responsibilities: 
 
1. 2. Tutors and/or demonstrates equipment, techniques, and other aspects related to a particular subject-matter, in conjunction with faculty; demonstrates subject-matter skills; directs students in practical laboratories; tutors students on problem areas of the subject-matter as directed by faculty or as the result of a student learning plan; demonstrates safety procedures for use of classroom and laboratory equipment and supplies; trouble shoots operational problems with laboratory and classroom equipment.

3. Researches background of subject-matter to maintain current information; as directed by faculty, compiles and organizes lesson plans and materials for faculty presentation; recommends the modification or purchase of laboratory and classroom equipment.

4. Requirements:
This classification requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or a related area; completion of course work in calculus-based physics (at least three semesters), and in mathematics up to differential equations; successful work experience of increasing responsibility that has included tutoring others; demonstrated skills in respectful, sensitive communication with people of diverse cultures, language groups and abilities; oral communication, including public speaking; written communication; research, compiling data for and preparation of statistical, narrative and other reports; use of a variety of computer software to prepare correspondence, memoranda and reports; and, setting up and maintaining online and manual files.

Job Summary

The position of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor of Science Education is a twelve-month, tenure track faculty position. The Executive Director is responsible for the overall direction and management of Oxbow Environmental Center.

The College of Education and Health Professions has graduate programs at the masters, specialist, and doctoral levels. Columbus State University has a strong focus on STEM education and is supporting various STEM initiatives such as UTeach Columbus (a replication of the nationally recognized UTeach program) and a Noyce Scholarship Program. The College of Education and Health Professions works closely with the College of Letters and Sciences on these initiatives. This individual will have the opportunity to design environmental science graduate courses for the M.A.T., M.E.D. and Ed.S. degrees.

The successful candidate will be a community role model who fosters an environment of professionalism, scholarship, continuous improvement in Science Education. Additionally, he or she is expected to be a strong advocate for Environmental Education within the university and community at large. Duties and Responsibilities

Primary role is to serve as the visionary leader of the environmental center and its educational programs; to teach one undergraduate or graduate course each semester; to assist in raising funds for and overseeing daily operations of this not-for-profit community outreach organization. The Executive Director is responsible for long range planning, implementing the strategic plan, on site policy, procedures and safety, site development, and negotiating contracts with vendors. In this capacity, the Executive Director develops and maintains relationships and promotes Oxbow Meadows visibility within the community. This position works extensively with Oxbow staff, Advisory and Development Boards and Dean, community leaders, partner agencies, and the community at large. Other key roles include budget development and oversight, oversight of trails, gardens and exhibits, teaching, research and publication.
Minimum Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate in Science Education with emphasis, or experience, in environmental science; experience and knowledge in public education; experience with managing a budget and staff of an environmental center facility; experience with university teaching and research, including successful grant writing and publication; instructional design and assessment. Faculty rank is open with experience of candidate. Competencies of individual must also include customer focus, integrity and trust, interpersonal savvy, can deal with ambiguity and change, and willing to be flexible and open to the views of others.

The College of Education at the University of Washington is seeking an innovative teacher educator and program developer to join a faculty committed to preparing successful teachers for urban schools to serve as the Director of the Masters Program in Secondary Teacher Education. The College of Educations Professional Learning Division is dedicated to designing teacher preparation programs that serve as national models of school-university collaborations. The Director of Secondary Teacher Education will join a team of program directors, faculty, staff, and school partners who aim to improve the lives of children and families through the quality of learning experiences and supports available in schools and communities. The role combines program leadership, program development and instruction, requiring deep knowledge of the subject area of teacher education and of other disciplinary areas which contribute to teacher education (math, literacy, science, educational psychology, etc).

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Professional Programs, the position will carry the rank of Senior Lecturer Full-Time and is a three-year, 9 month position at 100% FTE with three paid months of summer. Renewal of this appointment will be considered in the second year of the appointment.

Primary responsibilities include:

Serve as Lead Faculty for the STEP program, teaching at least two graduate courses in the program per academic year, such as Working in Schools, that provides a variety of support for students
Provide significant curriculum oversight including working with faculty and school partners to ensure that the program meets learning needs of candidates, supporting faculty and school partners to make meaningful connections between university and field experiences by convening regular faculty check-ins, managing curriculum changes, developing yearly and quarterly course schedules and teaching assignments
Lead faculty, coaches, and school partners to articulate the vision and guiding principles of the program
Develop and implement a professional development program for the doctoral student coaches who observe, mentor and evaluate the work of teacher candidates in their school placements
Select high quality school and community placements for the teacher candidates in the STEP and maintain strong university-school partnerships that include learning experiences that mutually benefit program improvement and K-5 teaching and learning
Manage the overall daily operations of the program, to include working with College of Education leadership to oversee the program budget
Oversee and coordinate the hiring process for teaching assistants and coaches, working with faculty to determine staffing needs
Oversee candidate support structures and processes for monitoring candidate progress through the program
Work closely with the directors of all teacher education programs to maintain the cohesiveness and quality of our programs and use data systems for continual program improvement
Participate in Professional Learning Division initiatives to create networked improvement communities of teacher educators and teacher education programs

Position Requirements
Masters degree required, with an EdD or PhD with a strong emphasis on teacher education preferred
Minimum of three years of secondary school teaching experience, preferably in an urban context
Success in leading and developing programs in education related sector
Experience building innovative school university partnerships in teacher education, including developing strong mentorship and coaching practices
Deep knowledge of current pedagogies to support teacher learning
Strong communication and organization skills and ability to work collaboratively with school and university teacher educators

The UNC-Wilmington Department of Physics and Physical Oceanography invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of lecturer, to begin Fall 2013.  Primary responsibilities of this position entail teaching undergraduate laboratories and, depending on the applicant’s qualifications, teaching lecture sections of the algebra-based introductory physics class.  In addition, the successful candidate may be asked to proctor exams for other faculty, lead recitation sections, and perform various other instructional tasks at the request of the department chair.  The standard workload for this position is 12 credit hour equivalents (CHE) per semester. 
Minimum qualifications are a master’s degree in Physics, or a master’s degree in Physical Oceanography with a bachelor’s degree in Physics.
