This nine month (August-May), tenure track appointment begins in January 2011 (Half year appointment in the first year).

Responsibilities: The faculty member will be responsible for teaching undergraduate courses including general physics, mechanics, and electrodynamics and nonmajors science courses, supervising undergraduate research, and mentoring students. Faculty members are also expected to develop a research program and obtain external funding through grant writing. Other responsibilities include advising majors and senior projects, serving on University and departmental committees and performing community service. In addition, faculty members perform other duties as required in support of organizational goals.

Qualifications: An earned doctorate in physics with the ability to teach with technology, familiarity with instructional methods promoting student engagement and evidence of scholarly research and outstanding teaching ability are required. Qualifications to teach college chemistry are desirable as well, but not essential. Research projects and curriculum development related to cybersecurity, forensic science, biotechnology, bioinformatics, or energy technology will align with the vision of the College of STEM at JCSU.

Position Summary: Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI seeks a science educator with experience in visual studies and a broad scope of curiosity about the natural world and its sustainability, to manage and develop the Edna Lawrence Nature Lab. The Nature Lab is a unique and well known RISD resource that serves as a natural history museum, a working studio for artists and designers, and a lending library of natural specimens. The collections, technologies, and programs of this research center inspire explorations of connections among art, design, science, nature, and the environment.

The successful candidate will bring a creative vision to the integration of art, design, science and nature into academic programming in consultation with faculty. Act as a catalyst to stimulate a dynamic discourse, oversee the development and care of the collection, as well as interpret it through exhibitions, and publications. Design, deliver, and participate in college-wide teaching and educational programs; administrate budgeting, fundraising and development efforts; oversee or directly supervise assistants, consultants, volunteers and student employees; develop and maintain environmental health and safety, and security policies.
Qualifications: PhD or Masters degree in a natural science, history/social studies of science, or related experience/ discipline including fieldwork. Five to 7 years of combined experience in educational programming, teaching, and administration with at least 2 to 3 of those years in administration. Curatorial experience preferred including preparation, maintenance and display of natural specimens such as live plants and animals. Digital imaging and information visualization skills are necessary along with strong writing, speaking and research skills;
demonstrated collaborative approach; strong interpersonal and organizational skills required. Interest in working with college students, youth programs, and adult continuing study programs.

Education Coordinator at Acoustical Society of America

The Acoustical Society of America (ASA) invites applications for the newly-created position of ASA Education Coordinator. A dynamic individual is sought who will lead in the management of programs in education in acoustics at all levels, with an emphasis on student activities. Examples include ASA's new program in K-12 educational outreach and the promotion of educational opportunities in acoustics for students in colleges and universities.
Applicants should possess excellent communication, E-awareness, and web skills and have a proven record in the understanding and the organization of educational programs. It would be helpful if applicants also have some knowledge of acoustics or related sciences as well as actual experience in the field of education.

Postdoc at Indiana University Bloomington

A unique opportunity for a post-doctoral fellow in mathematics or science education exists at Indiana University School of Education. The position offers collaborative and independent research opportunities working as a project manager of a large NSF-funded research grant. The grant, entitled Iterative Model Building: A Program for Training Quality Teachers and Measuring Teacher Quality, researches the effectiveness of a new approach to conducting field experiences for preservice elementary school teachers. The Project Manager position is full-time including full benefits and an annual salary of $50,000. This is a one-year position with the potential of renewal for a second year contingent upon continuation of funding and satisfactory job performance.

Collaborative research opportunities include working with the PIs in this project, working with faculty in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and working with faculty in the Center for Research on Learning and Technology (crlt.indiana.edu). The PIs for this project include Enrique Galindo (mathematics education, egalindo@indiana.edu), Anderson Norton (mathematics education at Virginia Tech, norton3@vt.edu), Valarie Akerson (science education, vakerson@indiana.edu) and Meredith Park Rogers (science education, mparkrog@indiana.edu). In addition to working with the PIs, the postdoctoral fellow will have opportunities to interact with other members of the mathematics and science education faculty. These program areas are part of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction, which is consistently ranked among the top ten in the nation. The Mathematics and Science Education Faculty are engaged in research, teaching and service activities, and have developed and maintained graduate programs that are highly regarded in the United States and the around the world. The Center for Research on Learning and Technology (CRLT) is an organization dedicated to helping people find appropriate application of technology to improve teaching and learning in diverse settings. The CRLT is a home for various research and development projects developing new applications of technologies that provide important breakthroughs for the use of technology for teaching and learning. The doctoral fellow will thus be immersed in a strong and supportive setting that creates excellent opportunities to further a career as a researcher and scholar.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the project’s director, Enrique Galindo, the Project Manager will manage research data, coordinate partnerships with local elementary schools, and participate on research teams. Other duties include the following: organizing all logistics with data collection for the various phases of the study, supporting the preparation of annual reports, making arrangements for the advisory board meetings, developing and maintaining data bases, organizing information and tasks from project meetings, maintaining research approval forms, working with project evaluators, presenting research findings at professional conferences and in scholarly journals, and supporting the writing of proposals to extend the current project.

Qualifications and Start Date:
Minimum qualifications: Earned PhD in mathematics education or science education by the start date, good organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, experience with statistical software and large data sets, strong technical writing skills, and an ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and at least 3 years of elementary school teaching experience. The start date is negotiable between June 1 and August 1, 2010.

Instructor at Yeshiva Univ.

Postdoc at Harvard

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work with Prof. Eric Mazur and Prof. Todd Zickler on the development and analysis of new computer vision-based and web-based tools for Physics Education. A PhD or equivalent in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Astronomy, or Physics Education is desired. Extensive computer programming experience is essential. Candidates must demonstrate knowledge or interest in the field of Physics (or Science) Education Research.

The successful candidate will work with members of Prof. Eric Mazur's and Prof. Zickler's groups to develop the next generation of the Interactive Learning Toolkit (ILT), a learning management system that is currently used by a number of institutions nationwide. The goal of the ILT is to become a platform for the delivery of research-based pedagogical techniques. The work will involve coordination of a large-scale software development effort, integration of computer vision systems, close collaborations with other groups engaged in similar activities, and helping to disseminate the use of the ILT. Additionally, the candidate will participate in research in computer vision, the use of technology in education, and the effectiveness of various pedagogical techniques. Finally the candidate should be prepared to spend a portion of the time on web site management and user support.

Humboldt Research Fellowships for Experienced Researchers are for scientists and scholars who have completed a doctoral degree within twelve years prior to the application submission date are eligible. This fellowship allows for a stay of 6-18 months in Germany which may be divided into a maximum of three visits of at least three months each and provides a monthly stipend of 2,450 EUR.

Two Postdocs at MIT

Teaching Problem Solving

Participate in newly funded program to develop diagnostic instruments to measure the degree of expertise in physics problem solving and to develop pedagogy to teach such expertise. Our developing online environment involves an open source WIKI-text based on our new Modeling Applied to Problem Solving pedagogy that is integrated with the tutors MasteringPhysics.com and LON_CAPA.org. One postdoc will have a Ph.D or Ed.D in physics/science education, educational psychology, or psychometrics, and must have experience in teaching physics. Some familiarity with theories of learning, test design and validation, and/or analysis of large educational datasets is desirable. A second position requires very strong computer programming (perl, web applications, MySQL) and/or statistics/data analysis skills. Applicants must be comfortable working in a small group and interacting with remote collaborators. This position is a proven route to positions in academia and education companies.
