Position Summary: Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI seeks a science educator with experience in visual studies and a broad scope of curiosity about the natural world and its sustainability, to manage and develop the Edna Lawrence Nature Lab. The Nature Lab is a unique and well known RISD resource that serves as a natural history museum, a working studio for artists and designers, and a lending library of natural specimens. The collections, technologies, and programs of this research center inspire explorations of connections among art, design, science, nature, and the environment.

The successful candidate will bring a creative vision to the integration of art, design, science and nature into academic programming in consultation with faculty. Act as a catalyst to stimulate a dynamic discourse, oversee the development and care of the collection, as well as interpret it through exhibitions, and publications. Design, deliver, and participate in college-wide teaching and educational programs; administrate budgeting, fundraising and development efforts; oversee or directly supervise assistants, consultants, volunteers and student employees; develop and maintain environmental health and safety, and security policies.
Qualifications: PhD or Masters degree in a natural science, history/social studies of science, or related experience/ discipline including fieldwork. Five to 7 years of combined experience in educational programming, teaching, and administration with at least 2 to 3 of those years in administration. Curatorial experience preferred including preparation, maintenance and display of natural specimens such as live plants and animals. Digital imaging and information visualization skills are necessary along with strong writing, speaking and research skills;
demonstrated collaborative approach; strong interpersonal and organizational skills required. Interest in working with college students, youth programs, and adult continuing study programs.

Other than regular hours (typically 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Mon-Fri.): As a resource to students, the Nature Lab is open 7 days a week, including evening hours. A flexible shedule is desired.
