North Dakota University PER Tenure Track Position

DESCRIPTION:
North Dakota State University invites applications for a tenure-track appointment to begin August, 2008. We seek faculty candidates with primary research interests in STEM education. The successful candidate will serve as a core faculty member for a proposed Ph.D. program in STEM Education. They will develop and contribute to an externally funded research program that includes funded opportunities for Ph.D. students. The successful candidate will have a tenure home within a department of the College of Science & Mathematics (80% appointment), with a cross-appointment (20%) in the School of Education.

The successful candidate will conduct research and teach undergraduate and graduate level courses. Additional duties will vary depending on departmental placement and rank, university and academic unit education needs, and the individual candidate's experience and interest. They will be involved in nurturing/leading collaborations among faculty interested in teaching and learning in STEM disciplines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:
Assistant Professor:
* Graduate Degrees in Education and in Physics, with a Master's degree (or equivalent) in one and a PhD in the other.
* Strong English oral and written communication skills.

Associate Professor:
* In addition to the qualifications listed above, significant experience/accomplishments in Physics Education are required.
Full Professor:
* In addition to the aforementioned qualifications, national distinction and international recognition in Physics Education and a substantial scholarly record are required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Postdoctoral Research Experience.
* Experience supervising/coordinating the research activities of students.
* Experience with the process of obtaining external support.
* Classroom teaching experience.
* Emergent record of scholarly publication.

New Doctoral Program at University of Illinois

The University of Illinois has announced a new doctoral program in the Learning Sciences, and they invite applications for admission for Fall 2008. The program is housed in the Graduate College of the university and draws on faculty from departments in the College of Engineering, the College of Education, and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. UIC's Learning Sciences Ph.D. program is the first of its kind to prepare students to address educational challenges through a focus on Learning in the Disciplines.

Non-tenure-track at University of Houston

The Department of Physics at the University of Houston seeks
applicants for several Instructional Faculty positions to be available
to start at the beginning of the fall semester of 2008. We are
particularly interested in at lease one candidate with a background in
Astronomy and Astrophysics. Instructional Faculty members at the
University of Houston are not considered tenure-track faculty, but are
eligible for multi-year contracts after an initial probationary period.
Instructional Faculty ranks mirror the normal tenure-track ranks and the
teaching salary is offered on a 9-month basis. Summer teaching may be
available but is not required. Instructional Faculty are eligible to
draw a summer salary from other sources such as research funds should

Duties/Responsibilities:
* Participate in the design, implementation, and evaluation of a study to assess the educational impact on students of the use of web-based coaches for problem solving in introductory physics
* Help in the development of a rubric to assess students' written problem solutions, including the creation and implementation of procedures for applying the rubric and analyzing data to determine its reliability and validity.
* Oversee the collection of data regarding students' problem solving skills from both individual students and entire classes and organize and maintain a database for the project.
* Supervise and assist in the training of personnel to use the rubric to analyze data on students' problem solving skills
* Collaborate with project PIs on the dissemination of findings from the research study
* Participate in some teaching of the introductory physics courses as necessary to become familiar with the instructional methods at the University of Minnesota.
* Assist as necessary in the production of the web-based coaches for problem solving

Program/Unit Description:
The Physics Education Research (PER) group at the University of Minnesota concentrates on effecting systemic reform in higher education physics classes with a focus on problem solving. The group is currently working on developing and testing computer software to coach students in problem solving and developing a generic assessment of problem solving skills.

Assistant Professor Physics, Columbus State University

Job Summary:

The Department of Chemistry and Geology at Columbus State University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the level of Assistant Professor to begin teaching in August 2008. Teaching duties will include teaching Physical Science for elementary school teachers and courses and laboratories to support a Physics minor and/or Astronomy courses. Tenure Track in Science Ed at Central Michigan University

The College of Science and Technology at Central Michigan University
seeks an exemplary teacher and scholar to fill a tenure-track position
at the Assistant Professor level in Science Education beginning Fall
2008. Applicants with a Ph.D. degree in one of the natural sciences or
closely related areas and a demonstrated scholarly record in science
education are encouraged to apply.

We seek a person who will teach relevant courses in his/her professional
field of expertise and who is expected to develop an externally funded
research program in science education. Excellent communication skills
and a commitment to supervision of both undergraduate and graduate
research students are required. The successful candidate should display
the potential for outstanding teaching, scholarship and for working with
others across disciplinary boundaries. For tenure purposes, the person
will be housed in one of the academic departments located in the College
of Science and Technology.

Candidates who will conduct research within the broad K-16 educational
framework are preferred, although outstanding candidates whose focus is
on improved student learning and teaching effectiveness only at the
collegiate level will be considered. We expect all candidates to be
well grounded in teaching pedagogies, active learning, assessment

Two Visiting Assistant Professors at Gustavus Adolphus College

Gustavus Adolphus College solicits applications for two Visiting Assistant Professors of Physics for the 2008-09 academic year. The teaching duties for each position will consist of approximately 12 contact hours per week in lecture and laboratory courses at the introductory and upper level for various audiences. We seek candidates who have completed the Ph.D. in physics, although ABD will be considered. Postdoctoral research position—mathematics education evaluation &

What: Postdoc

Ethnography & Evaluation Research (E&ER) at the University of Colorado at Boulder invites applications for a position as postdoctoral researcher in mathematics education assessment and evaluation. The researcher will contribute to the design, implementation, and dissemination of results for a multi-year evaluation for a national reform initiative in undergraduate mathematics education by five prominent universities. The researcher may also join other ongoing or new projects in evaluation and research of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and career development.

Desired qualifications:
BA/BS or advanced degree in mathematics, math education, or a closely related field, with graduate degree (Ph.D. preferred) in math, math education/assessment, or STEM education research.

Desired skills:
Design and analysis of survey and assessment instruments, statistical analysis, web programming, quantitative and qualitative software, use of scholarly literature, strong oral and written communication, independent and
collaborative work. Math teaching experience, familiarity with the research base in math education and assessment, and/or other skills that complement E&ER's existing strengths in qualitativeresearch and science education, will be a plus.

The Department of Physics at NC State University has hired six new faculty members over the last four years and continues to seek highly qualified applicants in all areas for tenure-track and tenured positions. Michigan State Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Physics

Details:
Michigan State University invites applications for a tenure-track assistant
professor of physics beginning fall 2008 with a joint appointment in the
Lyman Briggs College (LBC) (75%) and either the Department of Physics and
Astronomy in the College of Natural Science
(PHY) or the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL) (25%).

Candidates must have a PhD in physics or astronomy. Preference will be
given to applicants with postdoctoral teaching and research experience, and
especially to those who are passionate about working with undergraduates.
Duties include teaching a calculus-based physics for science majors in the
LBC Physics Program, teaching one course (typically at the upper
undergraduate or graduate level) in the Department of Physics and Astronomy
if jointly appointed there, and maintaining an active research program.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.

The joint appointment with the Department of Physics and Astronomy
(www.pa.msu.edu) or the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory
(www.nscl.msu.edu) will add to MSU's investment in increasing cross- college

Details: The Position: Demonstrating its commitment to sustaining and expanding its role in science education, the College has recently hired three new science education faculty and now seeks a person with a strong background in both science education and one of the sciences to facilitate the creation of a new science education unit and to lead that unit. Appointment will be in one of the academic units within the College at the Associate or Full Professor level beginning in Fall 2008. Teaching is required and load may vary based on administrative responsibilities.

The College: The College of Natural Sciences consists of strong departments in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Geological and Environmental Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics, Nutrition and Food Science, Physics, and a School of Nursing. The College is undertaking a major effort to improve its programs in science education. Our new Science Education Program Coordinator will lead us in developing new programs and enhancing existing programs for future teachers at both the elementary and secondary levels and in nurturing our Master’s in Science Teaching program. We currently have strong programs in outreach for practicing teachers including the California Science Project-Inland Northern California and other activities coordinated through our Center for Mathematics and Science Education. Our Hands-On Learning Laboratory for teacher preparation and professional development is used by over 70 preservice teachers, 40 classroom teachers and 1500 elementary students per semester. Many opportunities exist for collaboration between faculty in the various departments within the College, as well as with our colleagues in other colleges.

Ethnography & Evaluation Research (E&ER) at the University of Colorado at Boulder invites applications for a position as postdoctoral researcher in mathematics education assessment and evaluation. The researcher will contribute to the design, implementation, and dissemination of results for a multi-year evaluation for a national reform initiative in undergraduate mathematics education by five prominent universities. The researcher may also join other ongoing or new projects in evaluation and research of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and career development.

Desired qualifications: BA/BS or advanced degree in mathematics, math education, or a closely related field, with graduate degree (Ph.D. preferred) in math, math education/assessment, or STEM education research. ‘ABD’ doctoral candidates within one year of degree completion or others with 3-5 years research experience in math education may be considered.

Desired skills: Design and analysis of survey and assessment instruments, statistical analysis, web programming, quantitative and qualitative software, use of scholarly literature, strong oral and written communication, independent and collaborative work. Math teaching experience, familiarity with the research base in math education and assessment, and/or other skills that complement E&ER's existing strengths in qualitative research and science education, will be a plus.

The position is expected to be funded starting September 1, 2007, in Boulder, CO, as a one-year, renewable position, pending final notification of grant funding. The position will be in the research faculty track at the University of Colorado at Boulder, as a research associate for a Ph.D.-qualified candidate (otherwise as a professional research assistant).
