Intro Physics Lecturer, University of Tennessee Knoxville

 Engineering Fundamentals (EF) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is seeking multiple dynamic and innovative Lecturers to contribute to its first-year engineering program.  Each position is a full-time, non-tenure-track, renewable, 9-month appointment at the rank of Lecturer or Senior Lecturer based on previous experience.  There is future opportunity for additional funded teaching in the summer and collaborative research in engineering education. EF is the home of the engage program, an integrated and team-taught first-year curriculum that is responsible for teaching nine credit hours of common coursework for all Tickle College of Engineering first-year students. Positions are available in our introductory level physics or computing (e.g., Excel and MATLAB) courses. Engineering Fundamental courses incorporate the engineering design process, technical communication, teaming, perspectives of the engineering profession, and student success related topics. Position Overview
The Lima campus of The Ohio State University seeks a Lecturer and Lab Coordinator in the Department of Physics, for a one-year appointment beginning Autumn 2024. This is an annual appointment that may be renewed contingent upon the Dean’s approval, satisfactory performance, departmental needs, and the availability of funding. Performance Objectives
•    Demonstrate a strong commitment to and enthusiasm for excellence in undergraduate teaching
•    Teach introductory physics classes, including labs, for STEM majors and non-majors
•    Participate in physics outreach events

The College

The Ohio State University at Lima offered its first classes in 1960. The Lima campus sits on 565 acres which is comprised of 270 acres of woods, 35 acres of natural prairie, 200 tillable acres, and 60 acres that contain the academic campus (buildings, greens, and parking lots). There are 10 buildings on campus, four of which are shared with our collocated institution, Rhodes State College (RSC). Ohio State Lima also has two off-campus teaching sites: Ohio State Lima at Mercy Health St. Rita’s for its anatomy/cadaver lab (1,400 square feet) and Ohio State Lima at the Engineering Education and Manufacturing Center at the Ford Engine Plant which houses five labs, 12 classrooms and breakout rooms and a 300-seat auditorium.

Ohio State Lima currently enrolls 818 students who are taught and supported by 26 tenure track faculty, 52 associated faculty, 5 visiting faculty, and 56 staff members. Outside of the classroom, students have vast opportunities for experience through internships, undergraduate research, leadership projects, and community engagement.

The Department

The physics class sizes on the Lima campus are small, often around 20 students or less, and allow for a close interaction between instructor and students. Besides the successful candidate, there is a tenured faculty member on the Lima campus. Undergraduate students work as peer tutors and learning assistants. Our campus also offers numerous academic enrichment opportunities to our students, including Honors, Undergraduate Research, Service Learning, and Study Abroad.

Active Learning Initiative Postdoc, Cornell NY

 Applications are invited for an Active Learning Initiative post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Physics at Cornell University. The successful candidate will participate in a project to evaluate and redesign the introductory physics for life sciences (IPLS) courses in the department.

Job description:

The successful candidate will participate as a postdoc in Cornell University’s Active Learning Initiative. The Active Learning runs a yearly department grant competition that awards 3-year grants to support department projects to transform courses. The majority of the funding supports postdocs who collaborate with faculty on designing and implementing course changes. Ultimately, these grants aim to improve instruction based on evidence-based teaching practices and promote widespread change in teaching culture.

The Cornell Physics ALI grant will focus on the evaluation and redesign of the Cornell Physics IPLS courses. The successful candidate will work with the department chair, PER faculty member Prof. Natasha Holmes, and a team of faculty instructors and advisors to (a) evaluate the current courses and identify areas for improvement, (b) review best practices in the physics education research (PER) literature and at other institutions, (c) design revised instructional strategies and materials for the Cornell IPLS courses, (d) support instructors to implement those revised materials, and (e) assess the effectiveness of the new materials.

The successful candidate will be integrated into the Cornell Physics Education Research Lab (led by Prof. Natasha Holmes) and the broader discipline-based education research community at Cornell, which includes faculty, postdocs, and students across physics, biology, engineering, and other STEM fields. They will also be integrated into the Active Learning Initiative program, including professional development and training with other postdocs in the program.
