Description

The Department of Physics at Carnegie Mellon University seeks applications for the Director of Undergraduate Laboratories. This appointment would be a faculty position as Assistant Teaching Professor, but candidates with sufficient experience will be considered at a senior level. Carnegie Mellon University has teaching-track faculty with the titles of Assistant Teaching Professor, Associate Teaching Professor, and Teaching Professor. These non-tenure-track faculty positions are considered career positions that are not temporary, but with the expectation of reappointment and promotion.

The successful candidate will oversee and facilitate our undergraduate laboratory program at all levels of instruction. Responsibilities include: teaching several courses each semester; training new instructors and graduate student teaching assistants; overseeing the purchase of both routine lab supplies and capital equipment; supervising laboratory staff; curriculum development and innovation; and generally contributing to the active intellectual environment of the Department of Physics.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Physics and experience teaching experimental physics at the university level. The Department of Physics is part of a College and University that is proactive to include more members of previously under-represented groups and seeks especially candidates who will contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community. The successful candidate will support the learning and development of a diverse body of students, including physics majors and non-majors, and will foster an inclusive learning environment for all students.

A faculty appointment in the Teaching Track is expected with a start date no later than January 1, 2024.

The Te Kura Mātai Ahupūngao | Department of Physics is looking to hire a professional teaching fellow. Due to a pressing need to update our advanced teaching laboratories we have a fixed term opening for 18 months for the right candidate to deliver an improved and high-quality learning laboratory experience for our second- and third-year students. This exciting opportunity will provide the ideal candidate the chance to design and create laboratory experiments and guide students through their learning of experimental skills. The candidate will contribute to a team-teaching environment, educating the physicists of tomorrow. The ideal start date is the 1st August 2023 or earlier. This is a fulltime (40 hours per week), 18 months fixed term contract
Remuneration: PTF1 – PTF2 $96,823 - $107,016 per annum

Duties

The primary duties of the position are conducting research in physics education (70%) and lecturing (30%).


Qualification

The successful candidate will have a PhD in physics, educational technology, physics education, science education, engineering education or related field, with a number of publications in those fields. Good oral and written communication skills in English are strongly valued. Postdoc experiences for appointment of assistant professor are valued but not required.


Salary and living cost

AFTER Tax salary is within the range of $54,000--$66,000 (or EUR 52,000--61,000) per annum.  Rent is relatively low with two bedroom apartments costing about $600 per month. The university canteen offers meals costing about $2 each.

DBER Postdoctoral Researcher Position at RIT, NY

 Applications are now being accepted for a postdoctoral position on Professional Development of Emerging Education Researchers (PEER) with Scott Franklin. Funded by the National Science Foundation, PEER conducts workshops and field schools for emerging education researchers. The postdoctoral researcher will join a project that studies the sustained impact of PEER activities on participant's formation of researcher identify and subsequent research output. The research is primarily phenomenographic, with individual and focus-group interviews of participants combined with observations of field schools and workshops. The postdoc will also have an opportunity, if desired, to engage in curriculum development and presentation of PEER modules at schools around then country. Opportunities to teach disciplinary classes also exist, subject to postdoc interest.


Candidates with a Ph.D. in physics, physics education or other STEM or STEM Education discipline are invited to apply. An ability to collaborate with others and engage in generative research ideation is strongly valued.

RIT's Center for the Advancing Scholarship to Transform Learning (CASTLE) is seeking applicants for a Learning Assistant Program Coordinator to begin July 1, 2023 or sooner. Learning Assistants (Las) are undergraduate students that work collaboratively with faculty to develop and implement activity-based pedagogies that center on small-group discussions. This is a unique opportunity for the applicant to build on existing interests in undergraduate education while developing key skills in program management.

The LA Program Coordinator will oversee all program aspects, including recruitment of students and faculty, working with current faculty/student pairings to develop, refine and assess pedagogical innovations, and teaching sections of the LA pedagogy course required of all new student LAs. The Program Coordinator will be assisted by CASTLE and College of Science staff and work under the direct supervision of CASTLE Director Scott Franklin.
