Basic Function and Other Details:The Department of Physical Sciences is seeking a physics instructor who will provide instruction and leadership primarily in the algebra-based physics series. The ideal candidate will have experience teaching both lecture and lab, and in employing active learning and other instruction techniques supported by physics education research.

One full-time (10 months per year), tenure-track faculty position, beginning in August 2016. The position is based in the Department of Physical Sciences. The standard contractual work week for this position is forty (40) hours. Students take courses in the physics program to prepare for further education in physics, engineering, computer science, chemistry and allied health programs. The physics program, which currently consists of two full-time faculty members, is part of the Department of Physical Sciences along with the disciplines of astronomy, earth sciences, geology and oceanography.

1. Provide instruction in one or more areas of the physics program, primarily in the algebra-based physics series, but also in the calculus-based physics series as needed, at both the Oceanside and San Elijo campuses of MiraCosta College. (E)

2. Participate in typical departmental and faculty functions such as service on hiring committees, performance of faculty evaluations, collaboration with staff, and participation in department meetings. (E)

3. Work in collaboration with other full-time physics instructors in coordinating curriculum and mentoring associate faculty in these courses. (E)

4. Work in collaboration with instructional associates and support personnel to coordinate the ordering, distribution and maintenance of physics laboratory supplies and equipment. (E)

5. Assist in developing and maintaining instructional support materials for physics program, particularly in the algebra-based physics series. (E)

6. Develop, review and maintain currency of curricula for courses the individual teaches and develop new physics curricula in collaboration with lead instructors as appropriate. (E)

7. Participate in the development, assessment and evaluation of student learning outcomes (SLOs). (E)

8. Assist in recruiting students and promoting the physics program through participation in college-sponsored events, student clubs, and educational outreach.

The Oceanside Campus houses a comprehensive public community college, offering credit, career technical and noncredit courses. The successful candidate will be able to teach core college-level physics courses (Physics I, II (trigonometry based), and III (calculus based), with labs) and electives in their field of study. Selection ProcedureApplications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

Our Physics courses service the curricula of many different degree programs on campus. We currently offer algebra-based college level Introductory Physics and Astronomy courses for non-science majors, and calculus-based Physics courses for science and engineering majors.

Organizational Function and Responsibilities:This position is responsible for instruction in Physics at the college level. This includes developing a relevant and progressive curriculum, designing and implementing effective learning strategies and environments, delivering instruction of high quality, assessing student learning, advising students, and participating in college service activities at the department, division and college levels.
This position reports to the Dean for the School of Arts and Sciences.

3. Assists and advises students who have problems with assignments, tests, grades, course content, career concerns, and other matters.
4. Evaluates student performance and provides regular feedback in courses taught by the instructor.

6. Actively works with other personnel in student recruitment, retention and job placement. This includes developing strategies aimed at the recruitment and retention of minority students.
