The University of California invites applications for a Postdoctoral Science Education Fellow in Physics at the University of California, Santa Cruz. This position is part of a project funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) to transform teaching and learning in the undergraduate science curriculum. The successful candidate will help to develop and teach (up to two quarters per year) new introductory level physics courses directed at biology and chemistry students, will have opportunities to contribute to ongoing work in transforming courses in chemistry and biology, and will serve as the departmental liaison with the HHMI project, Directed by Manuel Ares of the Department of Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology. The selected candidate will work with faculty who teach large introductory physics courses towards the following goals: establish an integrated set of learning objectives for the new course; develop active and inquiry-based exercises and other approaches to improve student learning, including online material; develop or implement valid assessments of student learning and faculty practice in the course; and disseminate work through multiple channels, including scholarly publications, lesson plans for internal use, and a range of activities designed to establish a learning community on campus and beyond. The Postdoctoral Scholar will collaborate and interact with graduate students and postdocs at the Institute for Scientist & Engineer Educators, undergraduate learning assistants chosen from CalTeach (our STEM teaching training program) and faculty, staff and postdocs committed to innovations that improve student learning. The teaching fellow will hold two university appointments. The primary appointment will be as a postdoctoral scholar at 100%. When teaching, the postdoctoral scholar appointment will be reduced and a lecturer position will be added (lecturer appointment usually 37.5% for a five unit course). At no time will the appointment drop below 100%.

SALARY: The salary will be commensurate with experience.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Doctoral degree in Physics or related field, expected to be conferred at the time of appointment. Experience teaching or assisting teaching introductory and/or upper division Physics courses.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Strong disciplinary background in Physics and strong computer skills. Experience in university-level science education and assessment techniques; experience and a strong interest in educational innovations to improve learning and persistence of diverse student populations in STEM disciplines; familiarity with research literature on teaching and learning, and issues related to diversity and inclusion; education research in the candidate’s discipline or an interest in disseminating educational outcomes through scholarly and other types of publications; strong organizational and communication skills sufficient to work with faculty, staff, and students, and balance many competing priorities.
POSITION AVAILABLE: As soon as possible after closing date. Ph.D. must be conferred at the time of appointment.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Initial appointment is for one year, with possibility of extension to three years; with annual reappointment contingent upon positive performance review and availability of funding. For appointments within the University of California, a total duration of an individual’s postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at other institutions. Under certain circumstances, a sixth year may be considered.
