The successful candidate will be able to teach core college-level physics courses (Physics I, II, and III, with labs) and electives in his or her field of study. Electives currently taught include Astronomy, General Relativity, Classical Mechanics, Quantum Mechanics, and Mathematical Methods, though development of new electives is welcomed. In addition to teaching students in a small class setting, the successful candidate must be innovative, able to engage students from varying backgrounds and preparations for successful learning once at LSMSA, and willing to use office hours to tutor and assist students. Postdoctoral Position in Discipline-Based Education Research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) seeks a postdoctoral research associate in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education research.  This postdoc will be part of an interdisciplinary research team working to disseminate and integrate research-based instructional strategies in introductory-level university STEM course.  This effort is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation Widening Implementation and Demonstration of Evidence-based Reforms (WIDER) Program.

The successful candidate will work closely with co-advising faculty and will assist with one or more of the following projects: (i) research on student and faculty perceptions of research-based classroom instruction, (ii) evaluation of a faculty mentorship program, (iii) professional development or faculty membership activities, and (iv) evaluation of a faculty professional development workshop series.  

Preference will be provided to candidates who earned a Ph.D. in discipline-based education research (e.g., physics education research, agriculture education research, biology education research, or chemical education research) or a Ph.D. in Science Education with a research focus on higher education instructional practices. A record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed science education journals will be highly valued. The successful candidate will have a substantial background in qualitative research design and methods. The successful candidate will also demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience with NVivo or other similar qualitative software is preferred. The project will involve a team of researchers and thus the candidate must be able to work both independently and in a team environment. 

This appointment is for one year with possibility of extending to two additional years based on performance during the first year. Physics Department Associate, Reed College

The physics department is looking for a qualified applicant to fill its Department Associate position.  The primary responsibility of this position is to support the freshman physics laboratory by:
  • Organizing and training the student lab teaching assistants (~8), and overseeing their work in the lab (as proctors, mentors and graders).

    Postdoc at Michigan State

    Applications are invited for a post-doctoral researcher in Physics Education in CREATE4STEM and the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. The successful candidate for the current position will work to develop and refine instructional materials for a new calculus-based mechanics course taught around project-based inquiry, will collect data on student learning as well as faculty practice in the course, and will assist in the analysis of the collected data.

    Responsibilities include working in coordination with physics and education faculty to:
    * develop an integrated plan of course evaluation and innovation;
    * identify specific learning goals that represent faculty-consensus;
    * develop valid assessments of student learning in this course;
    * participate in and supervise the development of instructional routines, materials, and practices for improving student learning in this course; and
    * publish assessment tools and findings in Physics Education journals.
    The candidate will collaborate with faculty, post-docs, and graduate students in Michigan State's CREATE4STEM Institute (http://www.create4stem.msu.edu/) and in the Physics Education Research Lab (http://www.create4stem.msu.edu/group/perl).

    The appointment is initially for one year, with the possibility of a one year extension for a total of two years, based on performance and the availability of funding.     VAP at Earlham College

    Description

    Earlham College invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor position in the Department of Physics and Astronomy. This is a one-year, renewable up to three year, full-time appointment, beginning in August 2014. In addition to this position, the department has three FTEs with active research programs in computational biophysics, laser atomic and optical science, and astrophysics. Earlham's resources include modern laboratories in addition to multiple local computational clusters.

    Primary Duties & Responsibilities

    The Physics and Astronomy Department seeks an individual who is first and foremost excited about teaching -- in lecture and laboratory -- to bright and motivated undergraduates at a nationally selective small liberal arts college. Responsibilities include contributing to both introductory and advanced courses, as well as upper-level courses in the applicant's area of specialty. While research is not required, some resources are available, especially for research involving undergraduates.

    Experience & Qualifications

    Preference will go to applicants who have completed (or are presently finalizing a dissertation for) a Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field; teaching or post-doctoral experience is desirable. Earlham holds excellence in teaching as its most important criterion, so the search committee will be looking for evidence of a strong interest in teaching at the undergraduate level.
