The Center for Astronomy Education (CAE) & the Collaboration of Astronomy Teaching Scholars (CATS) Postdoctoral Fellowship in Astronomy Education Research
Applications are invited for a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship position in space-science education with the Center for Astronomy Education (CAE) at the University of Arizona, Department of Astronomy, Steward Observatory. The position will begin Summer 2010. The successful candidate will divide their time between working on several research projects underway through the NSF-funded Collaboration of Astronomy Teaching Scholars (CATS) program. The members of CAE and the CATS program provide a national collaborative of faculty, post-docs, grad students and undergrads working together to find solutions to fundamental questions regarding teaching and learning of space science. The successful candidate to this search would have the opportunity to collaborate with several members of this highly interactive research community.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a space-science related field (i.e. astronomy or physics). It is preferred that the candidate have prior teaching experience with college non-science majors, particularly in introductory astronomy/physics courses.
The candidate will be involved in developing a strong program of education research into how college non-science majors change in their understanding of astronomy content and in their attitudes and beliefs about science. Experience with curriculum development, qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and statistical analysis is highly desirable. Candidates should be self-motivated, able to work independently, and have an aptitude for learning new software and education technologies. A working knowledge of research data analysis software (like SPSS) is a benefit.
