Qualifications: Preferably, applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Physics or closely related discipline; however, well-qualified individuals with a M. S. will also be considered. The successful candidate will have substantial experimental/hardware experience. The applicants are expected to have excellent academic credentials and a proven ability to teach courses and laboratory sessions effectively, maintaining strong student-faculty interaction.

The new hire will be expected to be able to teach undergraduate Physics, including general education, lower- and upper-division physics, as well as, electrical circuits, basic electronics including the associated laboratories. The successful applicant will also be able to teach general education physics-related courses, as well as physics for teachers in training.

Department/School: The Department of Physics and Engineering is one of seven departments in the School of Natural Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering. It currently offers a BS in Physics, a BS in Engineering Sciences, a BA in Natural Sciences (intended for prospective High School teachers), and a Pre-engineering program. The department is very active in peer-reviewed research and encourages work involving undergraduates.

Facilities: The department moved into a new, three-story building in 2008/09 which it shares with the Mathematics and Computer and Electrical Engineering, and Computer Sciences departments. It maintains six physics and engineering teaching laboratories.

University and Community: California State University, Bakersfield, founded in 1970, is one of twenty-three campuses of the CSU System and currently has an enrollment of 8,500 students. We are a regional comprehensive university that prides itself in undergraduate education and small, high-quality programs. The University services a rapidly-growing socially and ethnically diverse population of 800,000 in an area of 10,000 square miles. The city of Bakersfield (with a metropolitan population of 380,000) is located in the southern San Joaquin Valley and has a much lower cost of living than most of California. Los Angeles, the Pacific Ocean, the Mojave Desert, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains are each within a two-hour drive from Bakersfield. Kern County is an energy rich region with outreach development and research opportunities.
