Items Used

Contemporary office equipment including but not limited to: personal computer, copy machine, telephone, scanner, and fax.
Computers, Printers, Power Supplies, Electronic Weighing Balances, Digital Multi-Meters, Function Generators, Oscilloscopes, Spectrometers, , Basic Hand tools, Soldering Irons, Grinders, Drill Presses, Band Saws, Stepladders and Push Carts. Additional equip may be required.

Position Purpose

Under general supervision of the Instructional Lab Manager (Associate Development Engineer), perform physics laboratory and/or lecture demonstration assemblies, installations, calibrations and tests. Repair and maintain instructional equipment. Assist in the design, fabrication, assembly and testing of new equipment. Store equipment when not in use. Order supplies and replacement equipment. Maintain records of laboratory exercises and equipment manuals. Operate audio/visual equipment and perform photographic services for the department. Perform routine laboratory maintenance. Perform departmental receiving function. Assist with laboratory and office moves.

Serve as a member of the Building Emergency Staff team. Perform other related duties as assigned insupport of instruction and research. Generally the work schedule is 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. but some alternate evening work schedules may be required.

Teaching Laboratory/Lecture Demonstration Assembly, Installation, Operation and Testing60
1. Prepare instrumentation as required by the laboratory and/or demonstration schedule.

2. Assemble/disassemble equipment used in the teaching laboratories and/or lecture demonstrations. 

3. Use hand tools, bench tools and measuring instruments as necessary to complete installations. 

4. Perform electrical wiring and install mechanical/electrical components as required.

5. Test and calibrate equipment installations to verify proper operation. 

6. Provide replacement equipment during laboratory sessions when equipment is found to be broken or otherwise inoperable.

7. Remove installations and store equipment when not in use. 

8. Assist in the assembly, testing and operation of new equipment for individual experiments. 

9. Assist in data collection of new and existing experiments. 
Instructional Equipment Fabrication, Repair and Maintenance20
1. Fabricate equipment, parts and tools from completed sketches using hand and/or machine tools.

2. Assemble and check electronic circuits from completed schematic drawings.

3. Responsible for the testing, operational understanding and routine maintenance of equipment used in the teaching laboratories and/or lecture demonstration areas.

4. Perform general troubleshooting and repairs of instructional equipment. 

5. Advise supervisor on major repair and/or maintenance needs. Coordinate with CNAS shop on repairs where applicable. 

6. Assist in equipment design by suggesting changes or alternatives to higher-level technical personnel.

7. Order new and/or replacement parts and equipment as directed. 

8. Maintain a computer and/or other inventory record of missing and/or broken equipment. Justify and assign responsibility for the loss or breakage. Advise supervisor on the need for replacement equipment.

9. Perform routine service to the laboratory facilities including the maintaining of individual workstations, printers, dispensers, and service drains.
General Support15
1. Work as part of the Lab/Lecture Demonstration Unit and provide back-up to team members as necessary.

2. Assist faculty and students by issuing supplies, equipment and technical information.

3. Assist in equipment inventory functions. Order instructional supplies as required to maintain equipment.

4. Maintain a computer and/or other inventory record of replacement parts and supplies.

5. Perform departmental receiving function.

6. Distribute, collect and maintain a record of Faculty/TA desk copies of textbooks.

7. Maintain records of laboratory experiments and equipment manuals.

8. Operate and provide instruction on use of the Physics 2000 Lecture Hall rotating stage.

9. Operate and provide instruction on audio/visual equipment such as TV cameras, Video monitors, DVD Players, overhead projectors and Public Address systems.

10. Perform photographic services for department faculty, staff, research personnel, and students.

11. Prepare tables and chairs for seminars or other departmental functions. Assist in laboratory and office moves as directed.

12. Drive personal car or Fleet Services vehicle on errands as necessary in support of position responsibilities.

13. With attention to detail and timeliness, operate the Department Scantron Machine to aid Instructors in compiling/verifying exam test grades.

14. Perform other related laboratory and/or technical duties as assigned.

1. Serve as one of the Building Emergency Staff for the department. 

2. Perform monthly inspection of fire extinguishers.

3. Assist in posting and/or distributing pertinent information to departmental personnel. 

4. Attend safety training as required to perform duties within position description.

Minimum Requirements

1. College level coursework in Physics plus three years of technical and craft experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Ability to communicate and work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, faculty, staff and students in a diverse environment.

3. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

4. Ability to operate Power Supplies, Electronic Weighing Balances, Digital Multi-Meters, Function Generators, Oscilloscopes, Spectrometers and other Physics Teaching Laboratory equipment found at the undergraduate level.

5. Ability to identify and classify basic electronic components such as resistors, capacitors and inductors.

6. Ability to read electrical schematics and perform basic calculations to arrive at specific values of components and circuits.

7. Skill in reading and understanding technical documents such as procedures, instructions, manuals, diagrams, and schematic drawings.

8. Skill and ability in the use of hand, machine and electrical tools such as screw drivers, wrenches, hammers, pliers, cutters, soldering irons, drills, saws and grinders. 

9. Experience with the fabrication and assembly of scientific equipment and parts.

10. Experience with the installation, modification, repair, testing and maintenance of equipment in a teaching laboratory.

11. Ability to safely move equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. 

12. Ability to climb a stepladder to assemble, retrieve or store equipment.

13. Skill in accurate record keeping with strict attention to detail.

14. Ability to work occasionally with low-level radioactive material. (A radiation safety monitor badge will be issued.)

15. Ability to spend long periods standing and/or walking around.

16. Ability to work with frequent interruptions from faculty, staff and students.

17. Ability to occasionally drive off-campus for departmental business.

18. Advanced ability and working skill to operate personal computers running a Microsoft Windows based operating system, including advanced skill of MS Office and Outlook 2010. Advanced skill to operate printers, scanners and copiers.
