The Department of Physics at National Changhua University of Education invites applications for one tenure-track faculty position starting from August 1, 2023. We seek outstanding candidates in the field of physics education. A Ph. D. degree in a closely related field is required. Full-Time Lecturer Position-Physics Department, Cornell University

The Cornell University Department of Physics has 40 active faculty and approximately 170 graduate students and 60 undergraduate majors. We offer a full range of university-level courses in physics, from general education courses for nonscientists to doctoral-level independent research. Approximately 2000 students from across the University take physics courses each semester.

The Department is seeking an experienced Lecturer or Senior Lecturer (rank will commensurate with experience) to teach two physics courses per semester, some with lab components. Examples of courses often taught by lecturers include PHYS 1101 - General Physics I, PHYS 1102 - General Physics II, PHYS 1112 - Physics I: Mechanics and Heat, PHYS 2207 - Fundamentals of Physics I, PHYS 2208 - Fundamentals of Physics II, PHYS 2213 - Physics II: Electromagnetism, and PHYS 2214 - Physics III: Oscillations, Waves, and Quantum Physics. All course descriptions may be found here. Teaching assignments rotate semesterly based on the department’s teaching needs. Often, assignments include one course as the primary instructor and one as a supporting instructor. Courses are often team-taught and a collaborative spirit is essential.  The department is invested in developing and implementing active learning pedagogies and technologies, and candidates should share this commitment. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable in effective classroom pedagogies to foster conceptual understanding and problem-solving abilities of students and to encourage them to be independent and efficient learners. The successful candidate will train, support, and mentor undergraduate and graduate teaching assistants (TAs). The successful candidate will be responsive to the ongoing development of alternative teaching techniques that continue to provide support for emerging student needs and will have an interest and drive for classroom and pedagogical innovation.

This is a three-year renewable, 9-month, academic appointment beginning in either spring 2023 or fall 2023, depending on the successful candidate’s availability.

  • An advanced degree in physics or in physics education; PhD preferred.

Teaching Assistant/Associate Professor in Physics, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

 Teaching Assistant or Teaching Associate Professor in Physics 

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applications for a faculty teaching position. The opening is for a candidate at the Teaching Assistant or Teaching Associate Professor level beginning fall semester 2023.  The position is for an initial term of three (3) years and is renewable upon review. We seek a dynamic person to teach undergraduate physics, primarily at the introductory level in a large-enrollment setting, using pedagogy informed by physics and astronomy education research. The successful candidate will also be expected to serve as a course coordinator to manage a team of faculty and teaching assistants for one of the introductory courses, join other faculty members in the department engaged in similar efforts, and participate in obtaining grant support for curricular and pedagogical improvements. Required qualifications include a PhD in Physics or a closely related field, a background in physics and/or astronomy education research, and experience in teaching at the college level using research-validated pedagogy.

The Department of Physics within the University of Cincinnati’s College of Arts & Sciences seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor-Educator to start August 15, 2023. This is a non-tenure-track nine-month appointment with an initial contract for three years; reappointments based upon performance reviews.

 

The Department of Physics seeks individuals to join our drive to engage students and maximize learning in our classrooms, with a particular focus on student success and retention in our introductory level undergraduate courses. Successful candidates will be expected to use research-based and active learning approaches, evaluate new models of instruction and embrace online learning, and contribute to the Physics Education Research activities of the department.  We also seek candidates who have interest in addressing the needs of a diverse student population, including differences in ethnicity, race, first-generation college status, accessibility, and academic preparation, through course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

Essential Functions

  • Teach undergraduate introductory level physics courses (in-person/online) with an emphasis on the use of research-based active learning approaches. Instruct laboratory courses, as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with instructors teaching parallel sections of course.
  • Teach lecture and lab courses for physics majors, as needed.
  • Hold regular office hours.
  • Mentor undergraduate capstone projects, as needed.
  • Train teaching assistants, as needed.
  • Additional responsibilities include participation in service activities, such as membership in university and department committees.

Minimum Requirements

Prior to the effective date of appointment candidates must have either:

  • A Doctorate in Physics or a closely related field.

OR

  • A Doctorate in Science Education with a Master’s degree in Physics.

Position Summary

The Specialist-Advisor position will advise undergraduate students in the Department of Physics & Astronomy (PA). This position will work collaboratively with the undergraduate program team to engage in proactive and holistic advising, offered through an equity lens, to support and empower students to reach their goals and to make a difference in the MSU community and the world at large.

As an advisor, this individual will: 

  • Assist undergraduate students in course selection, while maintaining and monitoring student records towards degree completion. 
  • Assist current students with identifying transfer credit equivalents as appropriate and help transfer students to develop academic plans based on incoming transfer credit. 
  • Approve and manage course overrides and academic program degree substitutions in collaboration with the undergraduate program director and undergraduate secretary. 
  • Support students by providing academic success strategies while encouraging growth in career development, including preparation for graduate school. 
  • Create connections with on-campus resources and help students find undergraduate research and internship opportunities.
  • Work with the department and college on tracking of career outcomes, on-campus and off-campus undergraduate research, and internship positions.
  • Bridge connections between students and other members of PA (undergraduates, faculty, staff, specialists, graduate students, postdocs, and alumni) and the broader MSU community. 
  • Participate in various undergraduate events such as New Student Orientation, department-associated undergraduate clubs, undergraduate commencement, and recruitment during the annual ADS competition and at College Colloquium. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
  • Help with development of advertising and recruitment materials for Physics and Astronomy and related degree programs and the REU program, and professionally represent the PA department when meeting with prospective students and parents.
  • Participate in undergraduate curriculum review and program updates as a member of the PA Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.  
  • Engage with faculty and academic staff in the department, the College of Natural Science Dean’s Office, the Honors College, and other units on campus. 
  • Collaborate and foster intentional relationships with advising colleagues through college-wide advisor meetings and professional development activities to promote professional growth and to support the student’s academic success. 
  • Work collaboratively through an equity lens to ensure all students and members of the PA undergraduate program feel supported and respected in their roles towards success.

The Physical Sciences Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is accepting applications for an Instructional Professor (IP) (rank commensurate with experience) to be part of the Phoenix STEM Program team. Phoenix STEM is a new program whose goal is to promote the success of historically under-represented and first-generation students in STEM majors at the University of Chicago. The Physics Phoenix STEM IP will teach collaborative learning workshops to help students succeed in our introductory physics courses and support other pedagogical initiatives in the department. The Physics Phoenix STEM IP will also work with the Phoenix STEM team to develop resources for Phoenix STEM students and serve as an academic advisor for these students.
