Lecturer Faculty Position
Department of Physics
The Department of Physics at Simon Fraser University, British Columbia, Canada, invites
applications for a faculty teaching position at the rank of Lecturer, commencing September 1,
2018. The main responsibilities of this position include teaching a minimum of four
astronomy/physics courses per year, and managing the use of the Trottier Observatory for
teaching and outreach events.
Applicants for the position must have a Ph.D. in Physics and/or Astronomy with knowledge and
practical experience in both astronomy and the use of an optical telescope observatory.
Candidates should also have a marked interest in, and demonstrated talent for, teaching at the
undergraduate level.
The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, a strong
commitment to excellence in communicating science to the public through outreach events,
outstanding communication skills and great enthusiasm for new course and instructional
laboratory development.
We expect to begin interviewing by February 19, 2018, but applications will be accepted until
the position is filled.
The Trottier Observatory is the anchor of a high-profile public science courtyard situated near
the centre of campus. Opened in 2015, the observatory houses a 0.7-m aperture reflector with
sharp wide-field optics and a sophisticated control system, along with a variety of specialized
cameras and spectrographs. The observatory and science courtyard are used to host a regular
series of very popular star nights for the general public (www.sfu.ca/starrynights), and the
observatory is used by a large group of students and local amateur astronomers to do
sophisticated projects. Remote access to the observatory by schools throughout the province is
planned.
