The Physics Department at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a 100% time Academic Coordinator/Lecturer appointment, rank 1 with a step ranging from 9-13 based on experience.
The Department of Physics is one of the top research and teaching institutions in the world with over 60 permanent faculty, 285 graduate students, 330 undergraduate majors and over 7,000 students in its courses every year.
Under general direction from the Physics Vice Chair and guidance from the Director of Administration, the Academic Coordinator/Lecturer is responsible for: developing and maintaining curriculum for all of our labs and classes in collaboration with relevant faculty and lectures; providing leadership in developing and tracking budgets for special projects; determining instructional needs based on close interaction with Faculty, Student Services, Instructional Support and students; developing and implementing innovative teaching practices; training and supporting graduate student instructors in state-of-the-art teaching pedagogy; developing and deploying innovative lab and discussion materials and worksheets to challenge the creativity of our students; applying the results of physics education research and local formative assessments to guide course reform; coordinating implementation of curriculum changes with lecturers, graduate student instructors, and instructional and student support staff; conducting assessments of student learning to guide continued course improvement and to document progress; and interacting with students and collaborating with the Instructional Support unit to assist them to manage, implement, and assess innovative projects arising from our Pi2 initiative, such as the new physics makerspace, The Tinkering Studio.
As a lecturer, the Academic Coordinator/Lecturer will teach the Physics 375 pedagogy course for incoming physics graduate students each fall. In addition, the Academic Coordinator/Lecturer will teach occasional courses or lab/discussion sections to test and guide the development of new instructional materials; participate in course and program development and professional activities designed to enhance the physics program.
This Academic Coordinator/Lecturer will work with staff in Student Services to assess GSIs for possible hire each semester, as needed; in coordination for the Vice Chair for GSIs, provide leadership, advice and mentorship to all of the GSIs to help them improve their teaching; coordinate academic support activities, including orientations, for new and continuing instructors, lecturers and GSIs and improve cohesiveness of lectures, discussions, and laboratory components of the course; fully manage all aspect of online course evaluations and bCourses for the department; coordinate and manage publisher contacts for textbook and online homework platforms proposals to support curriculum pedagogy; develop a new secure course curriculum database to collect and maintain current syllabi and other course-related records.
The Academic Coordinator/Lecturer will attend regional and national conferences and workshops to keep abreast of developments in physics education research and curriculum improvements; participate in online forums that address relevant issues in physics education; build professional relationships with colleagues on campus and at local universities and colleges to support our teaching mission; disseminate results of local reforms/improvements to the physics education community; and perform University and community service and other duties as assigned by the vice chair.
Under the direction of the Vice Chair for Instruction, the Academic Coordinator/Lecturer will provide advice and mentor, as applicable, those positions primarily tasked with teaching (lecturers, GSIs, faculty, etc.). The Academic Coordinator/Lecturer will not supervise or manage any instructional positions, including but not limited to Lecturers.
Basic Qualifications: A PhD or equivalent international degree at the time of application.
Additional Qualifications: Three to five years of University-level teaching experience, at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications: A PhD or equivalent international degree in Physics with a strong background in teaching physics for scientists at a major university is preferred, along with direct experience in active-engagement methods. The successful candidate will provide evidence of superior teaching performance, demonstrate leadership in developing and modifying college-level curricula and evidence of superior teaching performance and show awareness of current literature and trends in instructional content and methods at comparable institutions.
Title and Compensation: Academic Coordinator I. Salary ranging from $74,395-$89,610.
