Preceptor in Physics Laboratory, Yale CT

 Position Description: The Department of Physics seeks applications for a Preceptor in Physics Laboratory Instruction and Management. The appointment is expected to begin on August 31, 2021 or soon after. The Preceptor will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the 250+ enrollment General Physics Laboratory sequence (Phys 165/166). This includes contributing to instruction, working with and mentoring graduate student TAs, developing new content, and the management and maintenance of equipment. Students enrolled in the course are primarily life science students with some physics majors. The Preceptor will work side by side with ladder faculty and instructional lab staff but will report to the Instructional Lab Director. As needed, responsibilities will also include assisting with other aspects of the physics instructional program, including departmental outreach activities.


The position is for a three-year period and may be renewed under exceptional circumstances contingent on performance, position availability, and divisional approval.

Basic Qualifications: The successful applicant should have either an advanced degree in physics or closely related field, or at least a year of experience either teaching, supporting or managing a college level physics lab.

Detailed Qualifications: Applicants should have a strong interest or background in undergraduate teaching, learning and curricular issues. The successful candidate will have the experience and/or drive to become familiar with the current curriculum and to develop ideas for making improvements. Essential qualities include initiative, creative problem solving, and the ability to communicate effectively and productively. The applicant should also be skilled in basic mechanical and electrical repair.

                • An outreach activity or event that the applicant developed.
                • Online (or equivalent) posting of a project the applicant has completed or explanation of a physical phenomenon (educational).

                • Lab handout(s) or manual(s) written by the applicant.
                • A set of homeworks or exams written by the applicant.
                • A short video sample of the applicant teaching a lab or lecture class.
