The Advanced Physics Laboratory courses are required for PhD candidates and most undergraduate majors in both the Physics Department and the School of Applied and Engineering Physics (AEP). The courses in the advanced laboratories (PHYS 4410/6510) enroll over 140 graduate and advanced undergraduate students per year. The Director of the Advanced Physics Laboratory (DAPL) acts as the primary in-lab contact for students and faculty. This position leads the technical development and equipment maintenance for the courses, working independently and in partnership with faculty to maintain, innovate, and modernize the experimental apparatus, facilities, and projects available to students. The DAPL uses technical knowledge and skills including the use of tools to repair, service, modify, and upgrade multiple and complex teaching experiments. The DAPL will regularly consult with course faculty to develop, procure, fabricate, and integrate devices into novel and reoccurring experimental apparatus. Additionally, this position serves as the student learning manager; consulting, interfacing, training, and supporting enrolled students to coordinate technical responses, troubleshoot apparatus, offer technical assistance and oversight, and assist with orientation, often in the absence of faculty instructors. This position will also take on a key role in innovating and shaping the vision for the courses over time, in collaboration with a team of faculty.
The DAPL also leads administration of the lab courses, including supervising one or more student employees, maintaining and evaluating a laboratory inventory, tracking and completing purchases for laboratory and student projects, maintaining a clean, organized, and functioning laboratory facility. As the laboratory safety officer, this position oversees laboratory safety and guides students who are developing independent projects in coordination with best practices and university policy. The DAPL provides training, guidance, and documentation on the operation of equipment and the proper handling of gases, chemicals, and cryogens to faculty and students; This position is expected to create and uphold a collaborative, innovative, positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for lab constituents.
