Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research associate in Physics Education in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University (MSU) for the spring of 2023. The successful candidate for the current position will work on a team, co-led by Prof. Rachel Henderson and Prof. Vashti Sawtelle, collecting mixed methods data on self-efficacy and science identity from undergraduate science students. Data is drawn from area two-year colleges and cohort programs designed to support diverse student populations in earning STEM bachelor degrees.
Responsibilities include working in coordination with faculty at Washtenaw Community College, Mott Community College, and faculty in the College of Natural Sciences at MSU to:
collect data using the Experience Sampling Method and statistically analyze results;
distribute daily journal reflection prompts and thematically code results;
interpret analyses and produce claims that leverage the mixed methods design for self-efficacy and science identity;
utilize findings to inform program design and revision;
publish findings in physics and other science education journals and present research at professional conferences;
support graduate and undergraduate student researchers on the team in collecting and analyzing data.
Candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. in physics education, science education, the learning sciences, or a closely related field with preference to candidates with graduate or postdoctoral experience in mixed methods research. Explicit experience with mixed methods paradigms and tools is not required. This methodology is a substantial component of this project; those interested in learning should still apply. The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding mentoring skills, strong analytical skills, a robust background in learning theories, excellent writing skills, and the ability to work with undergraduate students, grad students, faculty, and staff in a collaborative environment.
The candidate will collaborate with faculty, post-docs, and graduate students in the Physics Education Research Lab. The Physics Education Research Lab at MSU is a dynamic community that includes 6 principal faculty, 2 research associates, 7 graduate students, and several undergraduate students. The appointment is initially for one year, with the possibility of extension, based on performance and the availability of funding. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Appointment is contingent upon successfully completing a full background check. Applicants should submit a cover letter describing their interests in mixed methods research, a CV, and a statement of research interests to careers.msu.edu (#816544). In addition, applicants should provide the contact information for three (3) letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin on November 28, 2022 and will continue until the position has been filled.
The starting date is negotiable with a preference toward candidates that are available to start in Spring 2023. Questions regarding the position may be directed to both Prof. Rachel Henderson (hende473@msu.edu) and Prof. Vashti Sawtelle (vashtis@msu.edu).
All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, citizenship, age, disability or protected veteran status.
