Position Description
The Department of Physical Sciences invites applications for a non-tenure track Lecturer position in physics and astronomy.

The selected candidate will be responsible for:
Providing 36 semester hours of instruction (lecture and laboratory) per academic year
Providing student support and advising
Maintaining an average of 10 office hours per week
Working effectively and professionally with colleagues

Equity and Inclusion Administrative Fellow serves as a member of the FAS Dean of Science’s senior leadership team, as well as with partners across FAS and SEAS, acts as the primary dedicated staff member in support of the Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity objectives for departments within the Division of Science at FAS and for the Department of Physics. Will be responsible for developing strategy and advising on policies and structures for Division departments, and also planning, recommending and implementing programming in the Physics department with the goal of recruiting and retaining a diverse and inclusive community.

Duties:
  • Take a lead role in the Dean of Science’s senior leadership team and partner with Physics faculty as Co-Chair on the Physics Equity & Inclusion Committee – drives the conversation, establishes the agenda, and ensures the sustainable and timely implementation of strategic policies and programming.
  • Conduct comprehensive survey of Department of Physics culture; take stock of obstacles to community building and make strategic recommendations. Leverage data and methodologies for use across all division departments.
  • Gather benchmarking research and best practices of successful programs at other Harvard schools and establish metrics that serve as guideposts as to whether policies are succeeding.
  • Assist in the production of reports, internal and external documents, presentations and briefs related to diversity, equity and inclusion to maintain consistent communication and transparency within Physics and the greater Harvard community.
  • Monitor the diversity landscape at Harvard Physics, statewide, and nationally to better coordinate existing and evolving committees, task forces, and initiatives.
  • Serve as FAS Division of Science and Physics representative at meetings, University committees, and briefings as needed in support of the development of a long-term diversity plan for the Department of Physics that will have a measurable impact.
  • Determine the appropriateness of and resources required for introducing various initiatives that increase diversity and equity and further inclusion.
  • Leverage efforts of other schools and connect to and partner with the goal of increasing impact where appropriate.
  • Create and promote diversity-oriented events, minority and protected class inclusion programs, and cross-cultural workshops, including activities to educate the Physics community on how to recognize, accommodate, and appreciate individual differences.
  • Establish consistent and comprehensive programming and services that engage the community and promote dialogue and self-examination.
  • Develop a budget for initiatives created in partnership with the Physics Equity & Inclusion Committee.
  • Make recommendations for the design and coordination of educational programs, workshops and learning modules for faculty, staff, students, and researchers that supports inclusive excellence in teaching and research.
  • Research and apply for funding resources to support programs, activities, and initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Faculty Affairs, Academic Programs, Human Resources, Graduate Admissions, and members of the Senior Administrative Leadership Team and other school partners to develop strategies for improved recruitment and hiring practices.
  • Serve as a visible resource and partner for Division of Science faculty, staff, students, administrators, and other stakeholders.
  • Supervise a part-time student worker position to support initiatives.
Basic Qualifications
  • A Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 7 years of experience, preferably in large organizations, non-profits or academic institutions working with issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
  • Demonstrated success in moving diversity and inclusion goals forward in an organization.
Additional Qualifications
  • Master’s and/or doctoral degrees in related field preferred (e.g., higher education administration, student affairs, counseling).
  • Preferred prior work experience in a STEM field within an academic setting in the areas of Ombudsman training, counseling, student affairs, or gender studies.
  • Experience in establishing objectives, leading training, event planning, logistics, and strong oral and written presentation skills.

DESCRIPTION

The Physics Department at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a 100% time Academic Coordinator/Lecturer appointment, rank 1 with a step ranging from 9-13 based on experience.
The Department of Physics is one of the top research and teaching institutions in the world with over 60 permanent faculty, 285 graduate students, 330 undergraduate majors and over 7,000 students in its courses every year.
Under general direction from the Physics Vice Chair and guidance from the Director of Administration, the Academic Coordinator/Lecturer is responsible for: developing and maintaining curriculum for all of our labs and classes in collaboration with relevant faculty and lectures; providing leadership in developing and tracking budgets for special projects; determining instructional needs based on close interaction with Faculty, Student Services, Instructional Support and students; developing and implementing innovative teaching practices; training and supporting graduate student instructors in state-of-the-art teaching pedagogy; developing and deploying innovative lab and discussion materials and worksheets to challenge the creativity of our students; applying the results of physics education research and local formative assessments to guide course reform; coordinating implementation of curriculum changes with lecturers, graduate student instructors, and instructional and student support staff; conducting assessments of student learning to guide continued course improvement and to document progress; and interacting with students and collaborating with the Instructional Support unit to assist them to manage, implement, and assess innovative projects arising from our Pi2 initiative, such as the new physics makerspace, The Tinkering Studio.
As a lecturer, the Academic Coordinator/Lecturer will teach the Physics 375 pedagogy course for incoming physics graduate students each fall. In addition, the Academic Coordinator/Lecturer will teach occasional courses or lab/discussion sections to test and guide the development of new instructional materials; participate in course and program development and professional activities designed to enhance the physics program.
This Academic Coordinator/Lecturer will work with staff in Student Services to assess GSIs for possible hire each semester, as needed; in coordination for the Vice Chair for GSIs, provide leadership, advice and mentorship to all of the GSIs to help them improve their teaching; coordinate academic support activities, including orientations, for new and continuing instructors, lecturers and GSIs and improve cohesiveness of lectures, discussions, and laboratory components of the course; fully manage all aspect of online course evaluations and bCourses for the department; coordinate and manage publisher contacts for textbook and online homework platforms proposals to support curriculum pedagogy; develop a new secure course curriculum database to collect and maintain current syllabi and other course-related records.
The Academic Coordinator/Lecturer will attend regional and national conferences and workshops to keep abreast of developments in physics education research and curriculum improvements; participate in online forums that address relevant issues in physics education; build professional relationships with colleagues on campus and at local universities and colleges to support our teaching mission; disseminate results of local reforms/improvements to the physics education community; and perform University and community service and other duties as assigned by the vice chair.
Under the direction of the Vice Chair for Instruction, the Academic Coordinator/Lecturer will provide advice and mentor, as applicable, those positions primarily tasked with teaching (lecturers, GSIs, faculty, etc.). The Academic Coordinator/Lecturer will not supervise or manage any instructional positions, including but not limited to Lecturers.
Basic Qualifications: A PhD or equivalent international degree at the time of application.
Additional Qualifications: Three to five years of University-level teaching experience, at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications: A PhD or equivalent international degree in Physics with a strong background in teaching physics for scientists at a major university is preferred, along with direct experience in active-engagement methods. Physics Education Research Postdoc, Rochester Institute of Technology NY

The PER group at Rochester Institute of Technology is seeking a multi-year postdoc in physics education research working on NSF Award DGE- 1846321 “CAREER: Learning to solve problems in context-rich environments: A naturalistic study in STEM workplaces, research labs, project-based courses and lab courses.”  If you are interested in researching project-based learning, undergraduate and graduate research experiences, and work-based learning (all stuff fairly outside the typical classroom experience) then this project could be a good fit.

The postdoctoral researcher will work with Associate Professor Ben Zwickl in the School of Physics and Astronomy. They will conduct ethnographic observations in research labs, classrooms, and workplaces; collect field notes and artifacts; conduct ethnographic interviews; analyze data; and communicate results to scientists, educators, education researchers, and administrators; and develop assessment tools for context-rich environments.

As part of the grant, the postdoc will also co-develop and co-teach a project-based course for 1st year physics majors at RIT. The postdoc will be part of a larger multi-disciplinary DBER group (https://www.rit.edu/castle/research/smerc) and STEM Education center, which hosts an REU in DBER.
