Position/Job Summary
The Ithaca College Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a tenure-eligible assistant professor to begin August 16, 2018. The successful candidate will embrace our commitment to undergraduate teaching and advising, will establish an active on-campus experimental research program with significant undergraduate student involvement, and will contribute to the operation and improvement of the department, school, and college.

The faculty of the Department of Physics and Astronomy are committed to delivering student-centered research-based pedagogy. Candidates should be familiar or have experience with active-learning techniques and be willing to implement them in the classroom. Strong candidates will be comfortable teaching across the required physics curriculum. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an active research program – conducting experiments in a laboratory located on the Ithaca College campus – and to advise undergraduate research students, including advising multi-semester senior thesis projects. Candidates with expertise in all areas of experimental physics, applied physics, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering will be considered. Special consideration will be given to candidates with the ability to advise electronics or instrumentation projects.

Position/Job Qualifications
The successful candidate must have completed a PhD in physics, applied physics, mechanical or electrical engineering, or a closely related field of applied physics by August 1, 2018. Experience teaching at the undergraduate level as a teaching assistant or as teacher of record is expected.

Department description
The Department of Physics and Astronomy is a vibrant community that values active and collaborative learning, meaningful student involvement with faculty in innovative research, and participation of all members of the community in activities of the department and college.

The department recently expanded to include nine full-time faculty and two full time staff (an administrative assistant and equipment/laboratory specialist). The faculty maintain a close relationship with our approximately sixty undergraduate majors and minors through small classes, student involvement in research, one-on-one academic advising, and department activities. Our faculty also teach in the college’s Integrative Core Curriculum (general liberal arts education) and provide several courses to satisfy requirements for other major programs (e.g., physical therapy, chemistry).
