TENURE-TRACK ASSISTANT PROFESSOR POSITION
Western Washington University
Western Washington University seeks applications for a tenure-track faculty position,
with specialization in physics and/or astronomy education research. This is a joint
appointment in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Science, Mathematics
and Technology Education (SMATE) program starting September 2018. Applicants must
hold a Ph.D. in physics, astronomy, or a related field OR in science education, with
preference given to applicants with graduate-level coursework in physics, astronomy, or
a related field. Candidates must have undergraduate or K12 teaching experience and
demonstrated interest in working with preservice K12 teachers. Preference will be given
to candidates with a record of or potential for teaching approaches informed by best
practices and/or research on student learning. Effective communication skills and an
ability to work effectively with diverse populations are required.
Candidates must have a record of high quality scholarship and commitment to developing
and maintaining a strong program of scholarship in physics or astronomy education.
Successful applicants will be expected to actively involve undergraduate research
assistants and to apply for external funding to support ongoing projects. Post-doctoral
research experience and current engagement in Physics/Astronomy Education Research
and/or Science Education research are strongly preferred. Preference will be given to
candidates who demonstrate potential for active collaborations with other WWU faculty.

interest in teaching, including description of how the applicant’s background and

increasingly diverse students and work effectively with diverse colleagues, (3) a detailed
research proposal including plans for how undergraduate research assistants will be
