The College of Science (COS) at the University of Utah invites applications for Manager of Educational Laboratory Facilities for the Gary and Ann Crocker Science Center (CSC). The CSC is a new integrated science research and education facility that offers seven new, state of the art educational laboratories along with additional classroom, advising, tutoring, and student support spaces. The Manager will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing many aspects of the CSC educational laboratories, including coordination, staffing and financial management. The manager will act as a catalyst between the CSC and COS faculty, staff and students to ensure a high quality, hands-on educational experience in the CSC. The manager reports to the office of the Dean of the COS.
Primary Areas of Responsibility:
Oversees the maintenance and staffing of educational laboratories
Oversees inventory of equipment, supplies, chemicals, etc., including ordering and tracking
Oversees the operation and maintenance of laboratory instrumentation and experimental testing equipment
Works with the COS faculty and staff to develop proposals and budgets for laboratory staffing, equipment, and educational programs
Interfaces with instructional faculty regarding laboratory facilities, staffing, equipment & supply needs
Provide scientific expertise when appropriate and help train faculty, teaching assistants, and other staff on the proper use of laboratory instrumentation
Oversees scheduling of labs and classrooms and serves as liaison with U Scheduling
May collaborate in the development, teaching, or evaluation of science laboratory courses or programs
May support undergraduate research projects or mentor undergraduate researchers
Collaborates with the Center for Science and Mathematics Education (CSME) and the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) to support laboratory course teaching and other opportunities
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Requires a Bachelor's degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency and 4 – 6 years of progressively more responsible management experience. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing staff and processes in order to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.
Preferences:
Master of Science or PhD degree in a science related field
Strong organizational skills that reflect the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks seamlessly with excellent attention to detail
Excellent oral and written communication skills
