Postdoctoral
Position: Biology Education Research at the University of Washington
The UW
Biology Education Research Group (BERG) seeks candidates with strong
quantitative analysis skills for a full-time
postdoctoral position to evaluate the effectiveness of an institution-wide
faculty development project: CAUSE for transformation: The Consortium
for the Advancement of Undergraduate Student Education project. CAUSE is an NSF-funded project that will
be comprised of faculty from seven major undergraduate departments (Biology,
Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Psychology, Computer Science, Public Health).
The core of the program is a 2-year Exploration and Implementation experience
that helps participants learn evidence-based teaching methods, supports them
during initial implementation of the methods, places them in a community of
practice, and provides “graduates” with opportunities for professional
advancement as a CAUSE Fellow.
The position will be under the supervision of Drs. Mary Pat
Wenderoth and Jennifer Doherty in the UW Biology Department and Dr. Deborah
Wiegand in the UW Chemistry Department. The postdoc will have opportunities to
collaborate with a diverse network of faculty, postdocs, and graduate
students—locally through the UW DBER community and nationally through
participation in meetings such as the Society for the Advancement of Biology
Education Research (SABER).
Candidates must have:

a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in a STEM
discipline, STEM education, public health, statistics, measurement or a closely
related field completed in the last three years
·
strong
quantitative analysis skills
·
success in publishing and presenting research findings
·
demonstrated interest in education research
·
excellent organizational, interpersonal, and
communication skills
Preference will be given to candidates who have, or are willing to
acquire, expertise in the following:
·
faculty development
·
Bloom analysis of exams
·
classroom observation protocols (i.e., PORTAAL)
·
project management
·
web-based data collection and database management
The postdoctoral fellow responsibilities include:
·
collection and management of databases
for student demographic information, PORTAAL
scores, Bloom scores, student exam performance, and ATI, SCII, ETLQ survey results
·
quantitative
analysis
·
assistance with the bi-weekly faculty
development meetings of the CAUSE fellows
·
project logistics
·
training
and mentoring undergraduate research assistants
·
creating annual reports for each CAUSE
fellow with a summary of PORTAAL scores, Bloom scores and observed achievement
gaps in exam performance
·
being lead author on research
publications and meeting presentations
The
position is full-time (100% FTE) 12-month appointment with a salary of $47,484, including benefits (Research Associate, UW Job Code 0148). The position is intended to be a two
or three-year position, contingent
upon satisfactory performance, available funding and university
policies.
