Assistant or Associate Professor of the Practice, Department of Physics, Wesleyan University, CT

Wesleyan University's Physics Department is seeking candidates to fill two teaching positions as Assistant or Associate Professor of the Practice beginning July 1, 2018.   The department has an ongoing initiative to address the growing and increasingly diverse population of students in our introductory sequences.  These candidates will work together with the department to build an innovative curriculum that incorporates validated best practices from physics education research.

The successful candidate will teach five courses during an academic year.   Four of these will be laboratory and lecture courses associated with one of our two introductory sequences.  The fifth course will be an upper level or introductory physics course.   Collaboration with a current faculty member in ongoing physics education research is also possible. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Physics or related field in hand by the time of appointment to be hired as an Assistant Professor of the Practice; a successful candidate may be hired as an Instructor if the candidate does not have a Ph.D. in hand at the time of appointment, but will complete the Ph.D. in Physics or related field within one year of hire.  The ideal candidates will have teaching experience.

The initial appointments will be for 3 years. Additional duties include advising and mentoring students, and participating in faculty governance at the departmental and university level. Wesleyan is a highly selective liberal arts college that values both scholarship and teaching very highly, has a strong, diverse undergraduate student body, and offers competitive salaries and benefits.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, a statement of teaching philosophy, as well as the email addresses of three references to http://careers.wesleyan.edu/postings/6129. As part of the teaching statement (or cover letter), we invite you to describe your cultural competencies and experiences engaging a diverse student body.

Evaluation of applications will begin on January 15, 2018.  Questions about the positions may be directed to Dana Gordon-Gannuscio, Administrative Assistant for the Department of Physics (dgordongannu@wesleyan.edu).
