The Department of Physics within the University of Cincinnati’s College of Arts & Sciences seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor-Educator to start August 15, 2023. This is a non-tenure-track nine-month appointment with an initial contract for three years; reappointments based upon performance reviews.

 

The Department of Physics seeks individuals to join our drive to engage students and maximize learning in our classrooms, with a particular focus on student success and retention in our introductory level undergraduate courses. Successful candidates will be expected to use research-based and active learning approaches, evaluate new models of instruction and embrace online learning, and contribute to the Physics Education Research activities of the department.  We also seek candidates who have interest in addressing the needs of a diverse student population, including differences in ethnicity, race, first-generation college status, accessibility, and academic preparation, through course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

Essential Functions

  • Teach undergraduate introductory level physics courses (in-person/online) with an emphasis on the use of research-based active learning approaches. Instruct laboratory courses, as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with instructors teaching parallel sections of course.
  • Teach lecture and lab courses for physics majors, as needed.
  • Hold regular office hours.
  • Mentor undergraduate capstone projects, as needed.
  • Train teaching assistants, as needed.
  • Additional responsibilities include participation in service activities, such as membership in university and department committees.

Minimum Requirements

Prior to the effective date of appointment candidates must have either:

  • A Doctorate in Physics or a closely related field.

OR

  • A Doctorate in Science Education with a Master’s degree in Physics.

Position Summary

The Specialist-Advisor position will advise undergraduate students in the Department of Physics & Astronomy (PA). This position will work collaboratively with the undergraduate program team to engage in proactive and holistic advising, offered through an equity lens, to support and empower students to reach their goals and to make a difference in the MSU community and the world at large.

As an advisor, this individual will: 

  • Assist undergraduate students in course selection, while maintaining and monitoring student records towards degree completion. 
  • Assist current students with identifying transfer credit equivalents as appropriate and help transfer students to develop academic plans based on incoming transfer credit. 
  • Approve and manage course overrides and academic program degree substitutions in collaboration with the undergraduate program director and undergraduate secretary. 
  • Support students by providing academic success strategies while encouraging growth in career development, including preparation for graduate school. 
  • Create connections with on-campus resources and help students find undergraduate research and internship opportunities.
  • Work with the department and college on tracking of career outcomes, on-campus and off-campus undergraduate research, and internship positions.
  • Bridge connections between students and other members of PA (undergraduates, faculty, staff, specialists, graduate students, postdocs, and alumni) and the broader MSU community. 
  • Participate in various undergraduate events such as New Student Orientation, department-associated undergraduate clubs, undergraduate commencement, and recruitment during the annual ADS competition and at College Colloquium. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required.
  • Help with development of advertising and recruitment materials for Physics and Astronomy and related degree programs and the REU program, and professionally represent the PA department when meeting with prospective students and parents.
  • Participate in undergraduate curriculum review and program updates as a member of the PA Undergraduate Curriculum Committee.  
  • Engage with faculty and academic staff in the department, the College of Natural Science Dean’s Office, the Honors College, and other units on campus. 
  • Collaborate and foster intentional relationships with advising colleagues through college-wide advisor meetings and professional development activities to promote professional growth and to support the student’s academic success. 
  • Work collaboratively through an equity lens to ensure all students and members of the PA undergraduate program feel supported and respected in their roles towards success.

The Physical Sciences Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is accepting applications for an Instructional Professor (IP) (rank commensurate with experience) to be part of the Phoenix STEM Program team. Phoenix STEM is a new program whose goal is to promote the success of historically under-represented and first-generation students in STEM majors at the University of Chicago. The Physics Phoenix STEM IP will teach collaborative learning workshops to help students succeed in our introductory physics courses and support other pedagogical initiatives in the department. The Advanced Physics Laboratory courses are required for PhD candidates and most undergraduate majors in both the Physics Department and the School of Applied and Engineering Physics (AEP). The courses in the advanced laboratories (PHYS 4410/6510) enroll over 140 graduate and advanced undergraduate students per year. The Director of the Advanced Physics Laboratory (DAPL) acts as the primary in-lab contact for students and faculty. This position leads the technical development and equipment maintenance for the courses, working independently and in partnership with faculty to maintain, innovate, and modernize the experimental apparatus, facilities, and projects available to students. The DAPL uses technical knowledge and skills including the use of tools to repair, service, modify, and upgrade multiple and complex teaching experiments. The DAPL will regularly consult with course faculty to develop, procure, fabricate, and integrate devices into novel and reoccurring experimental apparatus. Additionally, this position serves as the student learning manager; consulting, interfacing, training, and supporting enrolled students to coordinate technical responses, troubleshoot apparatus, offer technical assistance and oversight, and assist with orientation, often in the absence of faculty instructors. This position will also take on a key role in innovating and shaping the vision for the courses over time, in collaboration with a team of faculty.

The DAPL also leads administration of the lab courses, including supervising one or more student employees, maintaining and evaluating a laboratory inventory, tracking and completing purchases for laboratory and student projects, maintaining a clean, organized, and functioning laboratory facility. As the laboratory safety officer, this position oversees laboratory safety and guides students who are developing independent projects in coordination with best practices and university policy. The DAPL provides training, guidance, and documentation on the operation of equipment and the proper handling of gases, chemicals, and cryogens to faculty and students; This position is expected to create and uphold a collaborative, innovative, positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for lab constituents.

Preferred Qualifications: At least 4 years of technical training, post-bachelors’ education, or equivalent. Experience can include graduate work.

PER Postdoc, Michigan State

 Applications are invited for a post-doctoral research associate in Physics Education in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University (MSU) for the spring of 2023. The successful candidate for the current position will work on a team, co-led by Prof. Rachel Henderson and Prof. Vashti Sawtelle, collecting mixed methods data on self-efficacy and science identity from undergraduate science students. Data is drawn from area two-year colleges and cohort programs designed to support diverse student populations in earning STEM bachelor degrees.

Responsibilities include working in coordination with faculty at Washtenaw Community College, Mott Community College, and faculty in the College of Natural Sciences at MSU to:

collect data using the Experience Sampling Method and statistically analyze results;

distribute daily journal reflection prompts and thematically code results;

interpret analyses and produce claims that leverage the mixed methods design for self-efficacy and science identity;

utilize findings to inform program design and revision;

publish findings in physics and other science education journals and present research at professional conferences;

support graduate and undergraduate student researchers on the team in collecting and analyzing data.

Candidates are expected to hold a Ph.D. in physics education, science education, the learning sciences, or a closely related field with preference to candidates with graduate or postdoctoral experience in mixed methods research. Explicit experience with mixed methods paradigms and tools is not required. This methodology is a substantial component of this project; those interested in learning should still apply. The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding mentoring skills, strong analytical skills, a robust background in learning theories, excellent writing skills, and the ability to work with undergraduate students, grad students, faculty, and staff in a collaborative environment.

The candidate will collaborate with faculty, post-docs, and graduate students in the Physics Education Research Lab. The Physics Education Research Lab at MSU is a dynamic community that includes 6 principal faculty, 2 research associates, 7 graduate students, and several undergraduate students. The appointment is initially for one year, with the possibility of extension, based on performance and the availability of funding. The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Appointment is contingent upon successfully completing a full background check. POSITION DESCRIPTION

The UC Irvine Office of the Vice Provost of Teaching and Learning is looking to hire a one-year Postdoctoral Scholar to support its efforts related to the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s (HHMI) Driving Change program. This will entail the development of (1) a STEM student-focused learning community program and (2) data collection instruments that are aligned with said program. The Postdoctoral Scholar will work under the supervision of Dr. Michael Dennin (Vice Provost of Teaching and Learning, Professor of Physics) and Dr. Brian Sato (Professor of Teaching, Molecular Biology & Biochemistry; Associate Dean, Division of Teaching Excellence and Innovation). This is a one-year position with a proposed start date of January 5, 2023 (negotiable) with the possibility of an extended tenure pending funding availability.

The Energy and Equity Project, based in the Division of Physical Sciences, in the School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, at the University of Washington Bothell, invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Scholar who is enthusiastic and self-motivated with demonstrated capability and interest in conducting research on and with high school teachers integrating equity education into their physics instruction.

The successful candidate will be one who is ready to conduct research on existing data collected by the Energy and Equity Project, including hundreds of hours of video recordings of multiple years of high school teacher professional development. The Postdoctoral Scholar will be responsible for data analysis and writing research papers for peer-reviewed research and practitioner journals.

The Postdoctoral Scholar will be under the direct supervision of Dr. Rachel Scherr, and will also be part of a larger team including Dr. Kara Gray and Dr. Lane Seeley (Physics, Seattle Pacific University); consultants Dr. Tali Hairston (Equitable Development LLC), Dr. Sam McKagan, and Dr. Adrian Madsen (Alder Seattle Education Association); and Postdoctoral Scholar Dr. Jessica Hernandez (University of Washington Bothell). The successful candidate may either live and work in the Seattle area during their appointment or work remotely.

This position is a full time 12 month (one-year) renewable appointment up to two years, contingent upon performance and available funding. The start date will depend on the successful candidate's availability. The starting salary is anticipated to be $66,631.

Postdoctoral scholars at the University of Washington are engaged in full-time, mentored, advanced training to enhance professional skills and research independence, and perform primarily research and scholarship under the direction and supervision of University faculty mentors. Postdoctoral scholar positions are non-tenure eligible. Postdoctoral scholars in the Physical Sciences Division have an annual service period of twelve months. Job duties

Construct evidence-supported arguments about integrating equity into energy instruction, based on an existing video data library of hundreds of hours of online high school physics teacher professional development (as well as teacher lesson plans and surveys). Arguments may address teacher learning, impact of professional development on teaching, teacher dispositions, attitudes, and behaviors, or related topics.

Collaborate with university and high school teacher colleagues to construct, develop, and refine research findings.

Apply excellent presentation skills to develop conference proposals and present findings at academic conferences.

Apply excellent writing skills to lead and contribute to publications in peer-reviewed journals.
