Instructor - Mount Holyoke

 https://careers.pageuppeople.com/1024/cw/en-us/job/493583/visiting-lecturer-in-physics

The Mount Holyoke College Physics Department seeks a Visiting Lecturer to begin in Fall 2023, for one year, with the possibility of renewal. We are searching broadly for candidates with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching physics and a passion for engaging a diverse population of undergraduate students.

The instructor will teach the equivalent of 5 courses per year. In a typical year, this would mean 2 lecture sections and 6 lab sections (1 lab = 0.5 course), but these numbers can shift depending on particular needs for the year. The instructor will provide primary oversight for the introductory labs – consulting with faculty and staff about supplies, equipment, and curriculum, and supervising student workers who help with the labs. The instructor would have no other formal expectations (e.g. advising, college service). Upon successful review in the second year, and in consultation with the Provost, this teaching-focused position may be extended.

The Physics Department at Mount Holyoke is small but thriving. The five professors, with support from the physics technician and department coordinator, support coursework and activities for all our students, and we graduate 10-18 majors each year. We pride ourselves on providing opportunities for students to engage with potentially publishable research as early as their first year. Mount Holyoke is an undergraduate liberal arts college for women with 2,200 students and 220 faculty, located about 80 miles west of Boston in the Connecticut River valley, and is a member of the Five College consortium consisting of Amherst, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Candidates should have experience teaching at the undergraduate level, and interests in teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. Completion of a PhD in Physics or a related field (e.g. Astronomy, Engineering, or STEM Education) is expected prior to or shortly after the date of hire; strong candidates with a Master’s degree will be considered. Candidates will be required to submit a cover letter, CV, contact information for three references, and three statements concerning (1) teaching philosophy, (2) research interests, and (3) approach to mentoring a diverse student body. While research productivity is NOT an expectation of this job, we are curious to know what expertise you might bring. For those candidates wishing to engage in research or other professional activities, there are mechanisms of support for professional development.

The position is part of an Inclusive Excellence 3 learning community cluster funded by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. UGA is focusing on three areas of effective and inclusive teaching: advancing teaching evaluation policy, building faculty capacity to give and use feedback to improve teaching, and building individual and unit-level capacity to use evidence to improve and document teaching effectiveness. The position will be supervised by Dr. Erin Dolan (Biochemistry & Molecular Biology) and will involve close collaboration with the rest of the project team, Dr. Tessa Andrews (Genetics), Dr. Peggy Brickman (Plant Biology), and Dr. Paula Lemons (Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Office of the Dean of Franklin College of Arts & Sciences), with input from advisors in key units on campus such as the Center for Teaching and Learning, the Office of Institutional Diversity, and the Office of Instruction.

This position will involve a combination of practical and research activities focused on building capacity for evaluation of teaching. The postdoctoral associate will be able to shape the direction of their research with mentorship from and in collaboration with the project team. The postdoctoral associate will also have opportunities to interact with a vibrant group of faculty, other postdoctoral associates, graduate and undergraduate researchers, and professional staff as part of the Biology Education Research Group (BERG) and Scientists Engaged in Education Research (SEER) Center at University of Georgia, with an option to gain college-level teaching experience in a discipline of interest.

Candidates must have: (a) a Ph.D. in a STEM, STEM education, or other relevant social science discipline (e.g., higher education, organizational psychology, evaluation), or closely related field; (b) a record of peer-reviewed publication; (c) demonstrated interest in educational evaluation or discipline-based education research; (d) demonstrated interest in facilitating professional development, coaching, and consultation with faculty and administrators; and (e) demonstrated capacity to manage projects, including collecting and analyzing data and disseminating results. Preferred qualifications include familiarity with teaching evaluation, knowledge of theory and practices related to institutional change, familiarity with using multiple data sources to improve instruction, experience coaching or consulting with faculty and/or administrators, and capacity to work effectively in diverse, cross-rank, cross-disciplinary, and cross-institutional teams.

This position is full-time with a flexible start date as early as May 2023 and no later than September 2023 with the possibility of renewal for up to five years. Candidates should electronically submit a 1-page cover letter indicating their interest in and qualifications for the position, a curriculum vitae, and contact information for three professional references. The salary is $60,000 with associated benefits. Review of applications will begin March 1 and will continue until the position is filled.
