Chair at College of New Jersey

The Department of Physics at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) invites outstanding applicants for a tenure-track faculty position as Department Chair, starting August 2010. Candidates at the advanced Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor ranks will be considered.

Teaching and research are mutually supportive activities at TCNJ. Candidates should be strongly committed to the teacher-scholar model in a primarily undergraduate, residential institution and to maintaining both high quality teaching and an active and productive research program involving highly motivated undergraduates. Faculty members also serve as academic advisors and have service responsibilities within the College. A research laboratory and competitive start-up funds will be provided. The Physics Department is housed in a modern science complex (opened Fall 2002) that offers state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities and instrumentation. For more information about the department, visit: http://www.tcnj.edu/~physics/.

We seek a broadly trained physicist who has the potential to establish a highly visible undergraduate research program and collaboratively contribute to interdisciplinary curricular and scholarly efforts within the School of Science and at the College. The specific research area is open, but physicists with experimental research programs are especially encouraged to apply. Requirements for the position include: (1) a Ph.D. in physics or closely related field, (2) a strong record as an accomplished teacher-scholar, including demonstrated success in the classroom/laboratory, in mentoring undergraduate research students, and in scholarly outcomes, (3) a record of relevant leadership experience, with a leadership style that is open, consultative, and collaborative, and (4) the ability to communicate effectively.

To apply, candidates should send a letter of application; current curriculum vitae; statement of leadership philosophy; statement of teaching philosophy; statement of research interests and goals; graduate and undergraduate transcripts; and list of names, email and postal addresses, and phone numbers of three references. Please send to: Search Committee; Department of Physics; The College of New Jersey; PO Box 7718; Ewing, NJ 08628-0718. E-mail: physics@tcnj.edu. Electronic submission is strongly encouraged. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled; those received by October 5, 2009 will be assured full consideration.
