Position Summary:
The Office of Communications and Outreach ﴾OCO﴿ is responsible for laboratory communications, public outreach
and engagement, and educational programs and products at the University
of Colorado Boulder’s Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics
﴾LASP﴿. LASP seeks a full‐time
Education and Public Outreach Specialist to deliver existing
programming and to develop new programs with a variety of K–12, higher
education, and general public audiences. This individual should have
experience working with aerospace, academic or research institutions,
and addressing their educational and outreach programming needs.
Successful applicants will have demonstrated vision and leadership in
education and outreach programs with experience in public engagement
through multiple avenues. The specialist will need to function
independently in a fast‐paced
environment in which he or she represents the lab to external audiences
and serves as a liaison for outreach activities with the university.
Job Duties:
• Design and implement curriculum and programs in support of LASP's education and outreach goals
• Represent LASP within CU‐Boulder, in the local community, and at a national level
• Communicate science missions and concepts through a variety of avenues, including social media platforms, websites, print and visual media
• Build relationships with new partners and maintain existing partnerships with local and national organizations and agencies to further LASP’s mission
• Collaborate with LASP scientists and engineers to develop new and existing outreach and communications activities that support and build on LASP’s science missions
• Utilize LASP’s strengths and talents to maximize the impact of our outreach programs and to exploit future opportunities
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
• A bachelor’s degree in science or education plus 5 years of related experience, or an advanced degree plus 2 years’ experience in education and public outreach, or a science and/or engineering field with appropriate experience in public engagement
• A strong passion for Earth and Space Sciences
• Experience teaching STEM‐based curriculum ﴾formally or informally﴿
• Strong written and verbal communications skills; experience with public speaking, presenting at conferences, scientific meetings, etc.
• A demonstrated ability to interpret high‐level science and engineering concepts and disseminate effectively to a variety of audiences
• Experience with social media content development and distribution
• Experience with curriculum development
• Ability to collaborate with LASP faculty and engineers to develop education and outreach activities that support and build on LASP’s science missions
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within an institution and across multiple disciplines
• Ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines in a fast‐paced, changing environment
• Ability to work in a team environment
• Familiarity with MS Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite
Desired Qualifications:
• Grant‐writing experience and familiarity with governmental and non‐governmental funding sources
• A demonstrated ability to work with traditional media ﴾print, broadcast TV and radio, video production﴿
• Experience with web design and content management systems ﴾WordPress, Drupal, or a similar platform)

• Experience working with governmental agencies
• Previous work in an academic or research setting
• Interest and/or experience in public relations and communications
