Statement of Job:
The Department of Physics at the University of Southern Maine invites applications for a full- time, tenure track Assistant Professor beginning in Fall 2019. The candidate can expect to teach a mix of introductory and upper level courses and/or labs. The successful candidate should have demonstrated excellence in teaching and commitment to involving and mentoring undergraduate students in research. The primary focus is on teaching, and the successful candidate will also be expected to produce research in collaboration with students. We live our USM Service Promise Student Focused Every Day and we are looking for a faculty member who understands that promise and supports our values: Respect & Care, Integrity, Equity and Responsiveness.
The department of physics has facilities that include an optics lab, a modest machine shop (new milling machine, a lathe, band saw, and drill press), a planetarium, and several optical benches. Our department is committed to open and reproducible research using Jupyter/Python/Julia and have begun to introduce these tools throughout the curriculum.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Ph.D. in a relevant field by the date of employment.
  • The ability to involve undergraduate students in research is also required. 
Preferred:
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and experience in computational physics are preferred.
