Researcher at SynergyNet

Technology enhanced learning research post

An enthusiastic and energetic education researcher is sought for an
innovative Technology Enhanced Learning project, SynergyNet (http://tel.dur.ac.uk/).

The project, involving collaboration between computer science, education and
psychology departments at Durham University is part of the UK's Teaching and
Learning Research Programme funded by the EPSRC and ESRC (http://www.tlrp.org/tel/).

The aim of the SynergyNet project is to develop and research an immersive
classroom with a number of multi-touch tables or desks and communication
software that will encourage the sharing and exchange of information between
large screen displays and desks. Within the classroom, all learners will be
able to interact with, through and about the shared information. The
technology will allow learners to use their fingers to control the tables
simultaneously and develop effective interaction with the information and
with each other in support of their learning. Different phases of the
project will focus on learners in higher education, those in secondary
schools, and in primary education.

The research therefore aims to create a radically new technology-rich
learning environment which integrates with traditional classroom layouts and
collective activities and to develop a new pedagogy which eases transition
and movement between teacher-led and student-led interaction. It will
require detailed analysis of classroom interaction and student learning
strategies in the SynergyNet environment.

The role of the education research associate will be to work with other
members of the team to assist in the design of the user interface for the
tables and to undertake analysis of pedagogical factors from data captured
during sessions in order to assess the impact of SynergyNet on learning. The
post will be available for 4 years and would suit a post-doctoral researcher
or an outstanding candidate seeking to obtain a PhD. Durham is a collegiate
university and subsequently subsidised accommodation may be available.
