Associate Director for Teaching and Learning at MIT

Applications are invited for the position of Associate Director for Teaching and Learning, Teaching and Learning Laboratory, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The Teaching and Learning Laboratory (TLL) is part of the Office of the Dean for Undergraduate Education. Its goals are to promote excellence in teaching and learning throughout the Institute, serve as a resource for educational innovation, and further an understanding of STEM learning at the university level. TLL’s two main functions are educational development and assessment and evaluation, and the Associate Director will work with MIT faculty, administration, and students in both these areas.

Responsibilities

The Associate Director for Teaching and Learning will contribute to TLL’s ongoing programs and activities, as well as develop new services as needs arise. Specifically, he/she will:

- Work with faculty, teaching assistants, and other instructional staff on the advancement of teaching and learning, including improving classroom performance, using new pedagogies, and strengthening instructor-student interactions.

- Collaborate with faculty and others to create innovative pedagogy and curricula.

- Instruct in TLL’s Graduate Student Teaching Certificate Program.

- Provide services to TAs to improve their teaching skills, including leading workshops, performing individual consultations, and providing networking opportunities.

- Assist TLL’s Associate Directors in Assessment and Evaluation in studies related to the effectiveness of pedagogy, curriculum, and education technology.

- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives associated with the ABET accreditation process.

- Disseminate information about teaching and learning activities at the Institute through scholarly journals, academic conferences, and electronic media.

- Monitor current developments in higher education STEM teaching and learning; serve as a liaison between the STEM teaching and learning community and MIT.

- Represent MIT, when appropriate, to outside constituencies, including governmental agencies, alumni, foundations, corporate sponsors, and professional societies.

Qualifications

Qualifications include Ph.D. or Ed.D. in an appropriate field such as engineering education, science education, or a STEM discipline; five years experience in educational development or a related field; three years experience in college-level teaching; demonstrated knowledge of the issues, best practices, current research, and innovations in STEM higher education; ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a research university; excellent writing and presentation skills; talent for listening carefully and communicating tactfully; ability to work in a high-pressure environment with a minimum of supervision.
