We seek a candidate to provide leadership and vision for its University-wide faculty development center, the Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT).
Tufts’ Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching (CELT) supports faculty in their multiple roles as teachers, researchers, and members of the Tufts community. The Center is a division of the Office of the Provost and works with an advisory committee (The University Committee on Teaching and Faculty Development) comprised of University faculty and administrators from the different schools and representatives from the library and UIT Academic Technology (now Education and Scholarly Technology Services - ESTS.) CELT champions teaching innovation and faculty excellence by offering workshops and seminars on teaching innovation and assessment; individual consultations on teaching and educational research; and professional development opportunities for academic leaders. CELT’s current areas of operations can be described as follows (not in order of importance):
Faculty Development (CELT Faculty Fellows seminar; Academic Leadership Development program; Teaching consultation; Consultation on career and educational grants; Graduate Institute For Teaching; Coaching in teaching innovation seed grants / University Seminar program);
Writing and procuring extra-mural grants for CELT programming;
Collaborate with University groups responsible for learning technologies (Learning Management Systems, distance learning, etc.);
Communication within the University and to the outside world to promote teaching innovation and faculty excellence (website, newsletter, presentations at local and national conferences, scholarly and lay-audience publications);
Global / International training and development for faculty and educators.

The Director, Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching’s key responsibilities include publishing results of center programs; pursuing external funding for educational research; exercising administrative responsibility and accountability for externally funded research grants. The Director, Center for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching specifically will:
Support faculty in developing teaching innovations both through the Tufts Innovates program and individual consultations – meet regularly to plan, design assessments and evaluate results. Conduct classroom observations and assist with mid-term assessment. Provide faculty with best practices and recent research findings on effective teaching
Conduct and publish research on select teaching initiatives through either the Tufts Innovates program or individual faculty consultations
Assist faculty with formulating and submitting education research grants
Pursue and manage external funding for expanding current programmatic offerings
Assist the Associate Director in implementing and evaluating other center initiatives such as designing content for the website and newsletter
A faculty appointment in the school and department most relevant to the selected candidate’s expertise will be pursued.
Basic Requirements:
PhD or Ed.D in instructional design, education, psychology, evaluation, or other related field
Minimum of five (5) years in a higher education environment
Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office); basic survey design and statistical analysis
The successful candidate must have: demonstrated leadership skills; must possess exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills; ability to work under pressure and against tight deadlines with focused energy; exceptional judgment and ability to problem-solve with professionalism, confidentiality, and diplomacy; experience assessing courses and student learning; publications (preferably peer-reviewed)
Ability to travel to the different Tufts campuses
Preferred Qualifications: First hand experience with NIH, NSF or similar funding mechanisms (grant application and management) is preferred. Experience developing, implementing, or overseeing competency-based curriculum development is a plus. A Health Sciences or STEM background is valuable. Experience working in international contexts (faculty training, curriculum development, or research capacity building) is a plus. Experience with interdisciplinary / inter-professional training is preferred.
Special Work Schedule Requirements: Evening and weekend work and communication may be required based on deadlines.
