Open Rank at Rice

Research Faculty Position (rank open) in Science Education

The Center for Education and the Wiess School of Natural Sciences at Rice University invite applications for a non tenure track research faculty position in Science Education (rank open) to serve as Director of Research for the Center for Education's science outreach initiatives.

We seek a dynamic, productive, and forward thinking individual with an established research program in science education who will maintain an active research program and serve as Director of Research for a large, successful and well funded K12 outreach program focusing on elementary science in urban school districts. This is an opportunity to conduct research and to enhance the continued development of one of the premier K12 outreach programs in the nation focusing on elementary school science education in large urban school districts.

Rice is a small, highly ranked, private university dedicated to the "advancement of letters, science, and art" with particular strengths in science and engineering. Rice occupies a distinctive, tree shaded, nearly 300 acre campus only a few miles from downtown Houston. Rice University is committed to improving K12 education as part of its mission for the 21st Century. Over the past twenty years, the Rice University's Center for Education has worked towards ensuring more equitable and academically rich learning experiences for all children. We seek a faculty member who shares these goals.

The Center's largest outreach effort is the Rice Elementary Model Science Lab in which 80 elementary science teachers receive one full day of professional  development each week throughout the academic year. Because of the robustness and success of this program and its geographic location in one of the largest, most diverse and fastest growing cities in the country, the Director of Research will have a unique opportunity to conduct research of national significance focusing on elementary science education in urban public schools. The application should include a letter summarizing qualifications, curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, and names, addresses, and contact  information of at least four references. Salary and rank are open and depend on qualifications and experience.

Send the application to: Dr. Wallace Dominey, Center for Education, MS 147, Rice University, P.O. Box 1892, Houston, Texas 77251 1892 or by email to Wallace Dominey (wdominey@rice.edu). Rice University is an Equal Opportunity /
Affirmative Action Employer. Women and minorities are strongly encouraged to apply. The position will begin August 1, 2009 or sooner and is contingent on funding.
