Director at UCLA

The David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, is seeking a dynamic, visionary faculty member as Director of the Instructional Design and Technology Unit (IDTU). IDTU is charged with the integration of innovative technologies into the medical student curriculum in support of independent, classroom, and clinical learning. The Director supervises a staff of programmers and student workers in collaboration with an Associate Director. The Unit is part of an educational group in the Dean’s Office that includes the Center for Educational Development and Research and the UCLA School of Medicine Simulation Center.

The Director of IDTU is actively engaged in seeking out and responding to opportunities to improve learning and performance of medical students through instructional design consultation with faculty. The Director provides leadership for the selection, development, management and evaluation of educational technologies, deploying web-based, computer assisted, mobile and multimedia platforms as necessary. He/She manages the existing course management system for delivering a hybrid curriculum to medical students. He/She oversees a mobile computing requirement for medical students and is expected to be vigilant for emerging technological innovations in the fields of education and medicine. He/She consults with medical school faculty members to develop educationally sound, interactive learning tools customized for specific objectives and assists in implementation and evaluation of these tools. He/she provides faculty development in both instructional design and the use of technologies. He/She is an active scholar, engaged in research about and evaluation of educational technologies, including low to high fidelity simulations. Leadership of the Unit must be based on a clear vision for the future of the role of emerging technologies in medical education and medical practice.

An earned PhD or EdD in Educational Technology or related field is required. Applicants must have at least five years' experience in a higher education environment and have demonstrated accomplishments as a scholar. Experience in software design and implementation of new technologies is desirable. Must be conversant with new programming environments, server and networking protocols, commercial and open-source tools for development. Excellent communication, multitasking, and teamwork skills are essential.

This is an open rank, 12-month faculty position requiring administrative, faculty development/teaching, and research responsibilities. Salary is negotiable based on experience and faculty rank.
