Position: Physical and Mathematical Sciences Librarian

Description/Environment
Brigham Young University (BYU), a privately owned and operated university of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located in Provo, Utah, invites application for the position of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Librarian.  This is a continuing faculty status track (BYU equivalent of tenure) position.  BYU, an equal opportunity employer, requires all faculty to observe the universitys honor code and dress and grooming standards.  Preference is given to qualified candidates who are members in good standing of the affiliated church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Harold B. Lee Library, an ARL Library, serves nearly 33,000 students as well as 2,000 full- and part-time faculty.  The library employs 66 faculty, 94 FTE staff and professionals, and approximately 200 FTE students.  An average of 10,000 patrons per day use the librarys services and collections of over nine million items.

JOB MISSION
The mission of this position is 1) to work as the library liaison to the departments of Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Physics & Astronomy, and Statistics; 2) to provide reference, advanced research assistance, and library instruction in the disciplines of the above departments; 3) to develop collections in support of the curriculum of these departments; and 4) to participate in research, publication, and other professional development activities related to the above mentioned disciplines and/or librarianship.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master degree or higher required.
  • MLS from an ALA-accredited institution preferred. Individuals with related education or work experience and who are committed to completing the MLS within a specified period of time may be considered.
  • Additional advanced degree and/or experience with physical and mathematical sciences in an academic environment preferred.
  • Ability to provide advanced research assistance and to participate in outreach programs such as course-integrated instruction, exhibits, and presentations in assigned subject areas.
  • Subject expertise in assigned areas at sufficient levels to assess the curricular and research needs of the university, and to build collections to meet those needs.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability and desire to interact with students and faculty and excellent interpersonal skills enabling one to do so including the ability to work collaboratively with these populations and with library colleagues.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Flexibility including adaptability to changing organizational priorities and technological environments.
  • Demonstrated potential for leadership and for supervising other employees.
  • Technical Skills—demonstrated familiarity with tools commonly used to conduct research in assigned areas.
