The PositionApplications are now being accepted for the position of Assistant Professor,Physics/Astronomy at San Diego Miramar College beginning Spring 2016. Located in the Mira Mesa/Scripps Ranch area of San Diego, Miramar College is one of three colleges in the San Diego Community College District. The assignments may also include day, evening, Saturday, and/or off-campus responsibilities.
Major ResponsibilitiesThe incumbent reports to the Dean, School of Mathematics, Biological, Exercise and Physical Sciences.
The Assistant Professor, Physics/Astronomy will be expected to perform the following duties:
• Teach astronomy, physical science and physics.
• Develop curriculum for physics laboratory courses and astronomy laboratory courses.
• Use effective teaching strategies in order to enhance student learning.
• Supervising and instructing students in a student learning environment.
• Maintain office hours for student advisement and counseling.
• Participate in various college and/or district committees, which promote shared governance, with a willingness to take on a leadership role in the department and college.
• Fulfill the responsibilities of a community college instructor in accordance with district guidelines.
QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
In compliance with policies adopted by the Board of Trustees, applicants for this position must show evidence of the following minimum qualifications:

Master’s in physics, astronomy, or astrophysics
OR
bachelor’s in physics or astronomy AND master’s in engineering, mathematics, meteorology, or geophysics
OR
the equivalent.
Desired Qualifications
  • Relevant upper division and graduate coursework in Electromagnetism, Waves, Optics, Modern Physics and Astronomy.
  • Recent successful experience in teaching lecture and laboratory courses in one or more of the following at the college level: Electromagnetism, Waves, Optics, Modern Physics, Astronomy.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing, writing, and implementing laboratory activities and manuals with current technologies for lower-division physics and/or astronomy laboratory courses.
  • The ability to make effective classroom presentations, which enhance student learning by demonstrating successful techniques of teaching and subject matter mastery, especially for community college students.
  • Education and/or experience in using interactive learning techniques and promoting a student-centered classroom.
  • Evidence of participation in recent professional development activities that indicate currency in Physics and/or Astronomy, and science education research.
  • Evidence of technological literacy and skills appropriate for teaching lower-division physics and astronomy, including use of learning management systems, simulations and data-acquisition software.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, administration, laboratory support and other staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in a clear and concise manner, both orally and in writing.

    Licenses/Certificates/Credentials:Possession of a California Community College Instructor Credential(valid for life) in Physics/Astronomy

    Conditions of Employment:SELECTED CANDIDATE IS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING PRIOR TO EMPLOYMENT:
  • Submit “official” transcripts as stated on application; 
  • Pass a pre-employment physical exam at the candidate’s expense; 
  • Provide a Certificate of Tuberculosis Exam for initial appointment (Note: The certificate must be renewed every 4 years as a condition of continuing employment);
