The Position: California State University Chico is seeking a tenure track physicist to begin August 2016, at the assistant or associate professor level. Our department is committed to providing the very best undergraduate education in physics; we seek a colleague to join our team in this mission. Successful candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in all levels of undergraduate physics teaching and, in particular, effective research-based practices in physics instruction and the ability to actively involve undergraduates in research.

Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in physics or closely related field, with demonstrated experience in physics instruction. Proficiency in written and oral English is required. Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate may be considered; however, the doctorate must be complete prior to the beginning of the academic year (August, 2016.) Candidates must show high potential for leading innovations in physics instruction, possessing strong commitment to undergraduate education, and providing undergraduates with research experience.

Preferred Qualifications: Candidates with skills and knowledge in Physics Education Research (PER) are of particular interest to us, as are candidates with demonstrated excellence in physics instruction and the ability to lead departmental efforts to increase the use of research-based pedagogy in the introductory algebra/trigonometry course, involve undergraduate students in research, collaborate with K-12 science/physics education community, and attract external funding.

Responsibilities: This tenure-track position carries responsibilities in the areas of teaching at the undergraduate level (this is primary), scholarship and professional development, and service to the Department, University and community. In particular, duties will include implementing PER-based instruction for the introductory algebra-based physics courses to better serve the broad variety of students enrolled, teaching upper-division courses for both general education and physics majors, and conducting scholarly activities with emphasis on involving undergraduate students in research.

Salary: Salary commensurate with education and experience.

The Department: The department of Physics offers a B.S. and a minor in physics, with program tracks tailored to students interested in pursuing interdisciplinary/educational careers or physics-related paths including graduate study in physics or other disciplines. Our roughly 50 majors come from a wide variety of backgrounds and levels of preparation. We have an active, award-winning SPS chapter and a collegial departmental atmosphere.
