TT at Cal Poly Pomona

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin in the Fall of 2012. We are interested in hiring in the field of astronomy/astrophysics.

The Position: The new faculty member will teach the full range (from freshman to senior level) of undergraduate classes in physics. The position requires excellence in teaching and advising, professional and scholarly achievements, and service to the university.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in astronomy, physics, or a closely related discipline from an accredited university by August 2012.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
- Ability to collaborate with existing faculty.
- Ability to teach astronomy and astrophysics.
- University teaching experience (at least at the teaching assistant level).
- Evidence of independent scholarship.
- The department has a $1.24 million NSF grant creating a partnership with the University of Arizona Steward Observatory, which includes full access to the 90" (2.3-m) Bok Telescope on Kitt Peak, and the Steward Observatory 61" Kuiper Telescope on Mt. Bigelow. In addition to start-up funds for the initiation of a research program, the grant pays for students and faculty to travel to these telescopes and for additional research costs. The ability to take advantage of these facilities and opportunities will be a plus.

- a list of publications
- a statement of teaching experience and philosophy
- a research plan
- a graduate transcript showing highest degree earned (an unofficial copy is acceptable for initial screening)
- the names, titles, addresses, and telephone numbers of at least five individuals who can speak to the candidate’s potential for success in this position. Please arrange for three of these references to write letters of reference to be scanned, signed and sent to the e-mail address above. Initial screening can begin without the letters of reference, but they must be received to advance to finalist status. Finalists will be required to provide an official transcript showing highest degree earned.
