The University of St. Thomas Physics Department in St. Paul, MN (www.stthomas.edu/physics) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin September, 2012. A PhD in Astronomy, Astrophysics, or Physics is strongly preferred, but ABD (with appointment at the rank of instructor) will be considered.
A strong commitment to excellent undergraduate teaching and public outreach is essential. Our teaching load is the equivalent of six courses per year, and the successful candidate will divide this responsibility into a two-course equivalence devoted to operating our new observatory and a four-course equivalence comprised of lecture and laboratory courses throughout our curriculum. Our observatory houses a fully automated 17” telescope and several smaller telescopes, and we are looking for a candidate to use it in innovative ways that can attract external funding. In addition to outreach and teaching, the candidate will establish a research program that is appropriate for an undergraduate physics department. The field of research expertise is open, and start-up funds are available.
The University of St. Thomas has a strong commitment to the principles of diversity and inclusion, to equal opportunity policies and practices, and to the principles and goals of affirmative action. In that spirit, the University welcomes nominations and applications from a broad and diverse applicant pool.
Full details are available online at http://www.stthomas.edu/jobsatust/. To receive full consideration, all application materials should be received by November 1, 2011; however, the position will remain open until filled.
