The Department of Physics in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time teaching stream position in the area of Undergraduate Physics Education. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, with an expected start date of July 1, 2022, or shortly thereafter. 

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Physics or a related field by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement the existing strengths of the Department of Physics. Candidates must have teaching expertise in a degree-granting program at the undergraduate level, including preparation and delivery of lectures and undergraduate physics labs, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures. Additionally, candidates must possess a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry and a demonstrated interest in teaching-related scholarly activities. 

Evidence of excellence in teaching and a commitment to excellent pedagogical inquiry can be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong teaching statement, sample syllabi and course materials, and teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of reference from referees of high standing. 

Candidates are also expected to show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment demonstrated through the application materials.

Position Description

Innovative teaching will help the University of Calgary meet its strategic vision to be recognized as a top-five research university within Canada, based on three foundational commitments: sharpen focus on research and scholarship, enrich the quality and breadth of learning, and integrate with the community; and two horizontal cross-cutting themes: student experience and campus culture. In pursuit of this goal, the Department of Physics and Astronomy in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a tenure-track, instructor-stream faculty position at the Instructor level, with an expected start date of July 1, 2022.  The successful candidate will be required to teach a range of physics and/or astronomy/astrophysics courses at the junior undergraduate level, and possibly also senior undergraduate and graduate courses. The successful candidate will teach large introductory-level courses covering the topics of mechanics, electricity and magnetism, thermal physics and/or general astronomy, as well as coordinate multi-section offerings of these courses; and teach laboratory skills to both physics and astrophysics majors as well as to students in other science and engineering disciplines. Instructor-stream faculty workload also includes participation in our pedagogical, course, laboratory, and program development efforts. Specific courses and academic duties within these fields will be assigned by the Department Head based on the teaching needs of the Department.

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field, and must have a strong record of teaching physics or a closely related field at the post-secondary level. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a broad knowledge of physics education pedagogy. Activity in the area of physics education research is not required but could be viewed as a positive inclusion in an applicant's file. Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and learning and a desire to support student learning inside and outside of the classroom.

Visiting Assistant Professor, Physics

Washington College’s Department of Physics seeks to hire a full-time Visiting Assistant Professors in

Physics to start in January 2022 for at least the Spring 2022 semester; there may be an opportunity to

continue for the 2022-23 academic year.

We seek a candidate who is committed to teaching excellence. Candidates should be prepared to teach

introductory and advanced courses in physics, as well as labs. A Ph.D. at the time of appointment is

expected. However, outstanding ABD candidates may also receive consideration.

Essential Functions:

 Teaching three course each semester (spring 2022, and possibly fall 2022 and spring 2023)

 Holding office hours and providing appropriate support to students

 Working with the Quantitative Skills Center and other departments on-campus as appropriate to

support student success and retention

Qualifications (Education, Skills and Experience):

 Doctorate in Physics is expected; however, outstanding ABD candidates may also receive

consideration

 A qualified candidate should have at least one year of experience teaching at the

undergraduate level

Washington College’s Spring 2022 semester starts January 24, 2022, with new faculty needing to be on-

campus prior to that to get acclimated and prepared for the year.
