The faculty of the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences at California State University Dominguez Hills invites applications from individuals for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Physics.

Department of Physics
The College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences is one of the five main instructional units of the university. The Physics Department, an academic unit within the College, offers its students the opportunity to participate in frontier research at major laboratories while simultaneously providing a solid background in both the theoretical and experimental aspects of our field. All members of the full-time faculty hold the doctorate degree, and are dedicated to excellence in teaching and are active in research and other scholarly activities. The Position
Faculty members teach four classes or their equivalent, each semester; maintain an active research program; mentor and advise students; and serve on departmental and university committees. The appointment will be effective for the fall semester of the 2015-2016 academic year, beginning in August 2015. The Department of Physics offers a bachelor of science degree with three major options: General Physics, which provides access to advanced theoretical and technical careers; Physical Science: which is tailored to meet education standards and satisfy waiver requirements for a single-subject teaching credential; and Electrical Engineering, designed in cooperation with the CSU Fullerton College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science to facilitate a seamless transition to graduate work in Electrical Engineering upon graduation from CSUDH.

The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be expected to strengthen the major, minor, and service programs within the Physics Department. The candidate will be able to enhance our reputation for research by establishing a research program involving students. The candidate will help to develop educational laboratories and demonstrations, and will help the Department develop a new master's degree program in Physics. The candidate will be expected to teach both lower- and upper-division courses within the Department.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field is required by the start date (August 2015). Some postdoctoral experience is expected.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated research experience; experience mentoring undergraduate students; teaching experience at the undergraduate level; the ability to work within a culturally diverse environment; experience in obtaining external funding.

About the University
CSU Dominguez Hills holds the Carnegie classification of Master’s L and is a federally recognized Hispanic-Serving Institution. Class sizes are small as compared with large research universities and classes are taught by the faculty, not by teaching assistants. Many of the university’s students are the first in their families to earn a university degree. The Location
The university is located in Carson, California, in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. SUMMARY

As a member of the Physics Department in the Division of Natural Sciences (www.nic.edu/natsci), the physics  instructor will provide instruction in approximately four to five courses per semester. The teaching assignment will be selected from the following courses: Phys 101, , Phys 111, Phys 112, Phys 211, Phys 212, Depending on academic background, ENGR 210, ENGR 220, ENGR 223, ENGR 240, ENGR 241, ENGR 295 or selected mathematics courses may be assigned. The Department The Physics department is a small department consisting of two full time faculty members and one part time instructor. The Physics department serves majors in physics, engineering, and math. The Physics department’s small class sizes, supportive faculty and facilities provide an excellent learning environment for all physics students.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

This list includes but is not limited to the following:

• Teaches a minimum of 15 equivalent credit hours per semester as assigned and maintains additional weekly contractual hours, including a minimum of five office hours, five campus hours and five discretionary hours divided between office and campus hours for a total of 30 hours on campus per week
• Utilizes non-traditional delivery methods including Internet and IVC
• Becomes familiar with the assigned textbook(s), prepares class presentations and handouts for electronic distribution, and prepares a syllabus for each course
• Prepares, gives, and grades tests and homework and delivers grades to the registrar on time
• Receives training in and keeps skills current in using the electronic and physical equipment and software necessary to accomplishing teaching and advising responsibilities

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

Master’s degree in physics is required. Additional background in engineering is preferred. Prior experience with alternate deliver methods is preferred. Prior experience teaching non-majors physics, algebra and calculus-based physics, and engineering courses is preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS

For Assistant Professor:
Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent.  Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Ph.D. in physics or related area for Assistant Professor; teaching experience, preferably at the college level; and demonstrated experience working with diverse populations.  Ability to establish a research program with student participation.  
  
For Instructor:
Master's degree in area(s) of expertise, and/or active progress toward a Doctorate, or equivalent.  Also required are the ability to teach successfully, interest in productive scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Salary is commensurate with experience and credentials.

About the Position DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS FULL-TIME TENURE-TRACK OAA Position No. 15-16 PHYS-ASTRO/STEM-TT THE UNIVERSITY:  California  State University,  East  Bay  (CSUEB)  is  known  for  award­ winning  programs,  expert  instruction,  a diverse  student  body  of  over  14,000  students,  and  a choice  of  more  than  100  career-focused  fields  of  study.  The  University  has  campuses in Hayward,  Contra  Costa  County,  Online,  and  in  Oakland, California.    Our  600  faculty  offer bachelor's  degrees in 42 fields,  minors in 62 fields, master's degrees in 36 fields, and 1 doctoral degree program.  http://www20.csueastbay.edu/ THE  DEPARTMENT:  The   Department   of  Physics   offers   both   Bachelor's  of  Arts  and Bachelor's of Science  degrees.  With  relatively  small classes  (approximately  10-15 students  per upper  division  class)  and  emphasis   on  teaching,  students   obtain  a  considerable   amount  of individual  instruction.  The department  has a rigorous  curriculum  that places a special emphasis on hands-on  laboratory  work.   Upper division students  take two advanced laboratory courses, an electronics  laboratory   course,   and  a  computational   physics  course.  All  of  our  students  are encouraged  to participate  in research  with faculty members, and we have developed state-of -the­ art research  laboratories  in atomic and condensed  matter physics.   Research  facilities  include an optical frequency comb laboratory,  THz spectrometer, and a world-class atomic magnetometer. DUTIES OF THE POSITION:  The successful  candidate  must be able to teach a full range of physics courses for both majors and non-majors. The candidate  will be expected  to contribute  to revising curriculum  and developing  new courses for both majors and non-majors. Aside from  teaching  responsibilities, the successful  candidate  is expected  to develop  an active research  program,  including  submitting  proposals  to obtain extramural  funds. It is expected  that these research activities will include participation of undergraduate  students. The  University   is  home  to  the  Institute  for  STEM  Education   which  coordinates   numerous professional  development  programs to support CSUEB science majors, outreach to K-12 students in  the  local  community,   and  efforts  to  train  current  and  future  K-12  STEM-educators. The successful  candidate  is expected  to contribute  to the efforts of the Institute for STEM Education and collaborate  with other faculty  members  to develop innovative  programs  aimed at increasing science literacy. Please note that teaching  assignments  at California  State University,  East Bay include courses at the Hayward, Concord and Online campuses.   In addition to teaching, all faculty have advising responsibilities,  assist  the  department   with  administrative   and/or  committee   work,  and  are expected to assume campus-wide  service responsibilities.
