Assistant Professor of Physics
College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences
CSU Dominguez Hills

Position Description
The faculty of the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences at California State University Dominguez Hills invites applications from individuals for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the Department of Physics.

Department of Physics
The College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences is one of the five main instructional units of the university. The Physics Department, an academic unit within the College, offers its students the opportunity to participate in frontier research at major laboratories while simultaneously providing a solid background in both the theoretical and experimental aspects of our field. All members of the full-time faculty hold the doctorate degree, and are dedicated to excellence in teaching and are active in research and other scholarly activities. Another attractive feature of the Department is its small class size, allowing students to interact frequently and effectively with instructors within and outside of class.

For more information see: http://www.nbs.csudh.edu/physics

The Position
Faculty members teach four classes or their equivalent, each semester; maintain an active research program; mentor and advise students; and serve on departmental and university committees. The appointment will be effective for the fall semester of the 2015-2016 academic year, beginning in August 2015. The Department of Physics offers a bachelor of science degree with three major options: General Physics, which provides access to advanced theoretical and technical careers; Physical Science: which is tailored to meet education standards and satisfy waiver requirements for a single-subject teaching credential; and Electrical Engineering, designed in cooperation with the CSU Fullerton College of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science to facilitate a seamless transition to graduate work in Electrical Engineering upon graduation from CSUDH.

The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be expected to strengthen the major, minor, and service programs within the Physics Department. The candidate will be able to enhance our reputation for research by establishing a research program involving students. The candidate will help to develop educational laboratories and demonstrations, and will help the Department develop a new master's degree program in Physics. The candidate will be expected to teach both lower- and upper-division courses within the Department.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field is required by the start date (August 2015). Some postdoctoral experience is expected.

Preferred Qualifications: Demonstrated research experience; experience mentoring undergraduate students; teaching experience at the undergraduate level; the ability to work within a culturally diverse environment; experience in obtaining external funding.

About the University
CSU Dominguez Hills holds the Carnegie classification of Master’s L and is a federally recognized Hispanic-Serving Institution. Class sizes are small as compared with large research universities and classes are taught by the faculty, not by teaching assistants. Many of the university’s students are the first in their families to earn a university degree. While the university enrolls traditional full-time students, many students enroll part-time and attend late afternoon, evening and weekend classes because of work and family responsibilities.

CSU Dominguez Hills offers 45 baccalaureate degrees, 24 master’s degrees, and a number of certificate and credential programs. Enrollment exceeds 14,000 students and the student population is among the most ethnically and culturally rich in the nation: 45% Hispanic, 23% African American, 17% white and 12% Asian/Pacific Islanders.

The university is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the accrediting body for institutions of higher learning in the West. Eleven programs hold accreditations from national professional associations: business administration, clinical sciences, computer science, education, health science, music, nursing, occupational therapy, public administration, special education, and theatre arts.

The academic programs of the university are organized under the Colleges of Arts and Humanities, Business Administration and Public Policy, Extended and International Education, Natural and Behavioral Sciences, Education, and Health and Human Services, and Nursing. While continuing to emphasize the liberal arts and sciences, professional programs offered at the undergraduate and graduate level, developed to serve the region’s workforce needs, are of great interest to students and prepare them for professions in a variety of industries.

Known for excellence in teacher education, nursing, psychology, business administration, and digital media arts, new degree programs include computer science, criminal justice, recreation and leisure studies, social work, and communication disorders. CSU Dominguez Hills is a national leader in distance learning with 10 academic degrees and seven certificate programs offered.

Faculty
A tradition of teaching excellence lies at the heart of the university experience for Dominguez Hills’ students. Most of the faculty have earned doctoral degrees from prestigious universities across the nation. The faculty strives to sustain a dynamic teaching and learning environment in a multicultural setting. The Academic Senate provides a forum for faculty, administration, students and others to be represented and consulted regarding such vital issues as budget priorities, academic standards, curriculum and instruction, and student affairs.

Student Life
At CSU Dominguez Hills, there’s more to student life than the classroom. The university offers a dynamic, interactive and enriching community of learners, teachers and peers sharing diverse points of view. There are multitudes of ways for students to pursue interests, get involved, and get the most from their academic experience.

An office of student life enhances student development by coordinating a variety of co-curricular activities, including 60 student organizations. Students are encouraged to perform community service and participate in leadership development. The Multicultural Center on campus promotes the exploration of diverse heritages, values and cultural experiences by offering a wide range of activities and programs throughout the academic year.

CSU Dominguez Hills is a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II institution that competes in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). CSU Dominguez Hills is one of the most athletically competitive and honored schools in the CCAA, with 23 conference titles and four national championships to date, including the 2008 NCAA D-II Men’s Soccer National Championship. CSU Dominguez Hills sponsors 11 intercollegiate athletic teams.

The Location
The university is located in Carson, California, in the South Bay region of Los Angeles County. Its 346-acre park-like campus is situated in the historic Rancho San Pedro, the oldest Spanish land grant in the Los Angeles area. The site remained in the continuous possession of the Dominguez family for seven generations - from its inception in 1794 to its acquisition by the state of California.

The Region
The South Bay is one of the most culturally, economically, and ethnically diverse areas in the United States, with a largely even distribution of the population with African, Asian/Pacific Islander, European, and Latino ancestry. The university is located in the city of Carson, a city of 93,000 residents and one of the many municipalities that border the city of Los Angeles. Cultural, performance and sports venues in downtown Los Angeles are about 15 minutes away and the South Bay beach communities are a few minutes away to the west and south. The StubHub, a 125-acre sports center developed by AEG and home to Major League Soccer’s L.A. Galaxy and Chivas USA, is located on the CSUDH campus.

The campus is strategically located in the heart of a major technological, industrial and transportation complex in Southern California. This area includes the massive Port of Long Beach and the Port of Los Angeles – Southern California’s gateway to international commerce. The South Bay region is also home to aerospace, oil refinery, healthcare and automotive industries.
