 Quantum Information Science and Technology postdoc wanted!

Thanks to some good news I received this week I am anticipating hiring a postdoctoral researcher in the near future to work on a Quantum Information Science and Technology education project. While we await the final grant paperwork I’d like to get started on identifying candidates. This is for a multi-year project developing hands-on QIST laboratory curriculum. This project aims to expand undergraduate access to meaningful QIST experimental experiences while minimizing institutional hardware burdens. The postdoc will play a central role in designing competencies, developing instructional modules, preparing experimental hardware, assessing pilot implementations, coordinating with partner institutions, and supporting dissemination.

We’re looking for candidates with a PhD in physics or related field with an ability to work effectively with collaborators. Ideal candidates will have experience with experimental quantum physics and/or physics education research. Funding for conference travel and opportunities to gain teaching experience in a diverse teaching environment are also available. California State University San Marcos is a beautiful campus in North County San Diego (~20-30 minutes from the beach) with a welcoming and supportive community. The department of physics is small (<10 tenure track faculty, and ~10 graduates/year) with several active and well-funded research programs. My lab has active collaborations with multiple research groups in both experimental quantum information science and QIS education and workforce development. Finally, CSUSM also has a very active discipline-based education research community and is home to the Center for Research and Engagement in Science Education (CRESE).

[Rumor] Postdoc at Michigan State

The Department of Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering (CMSE) at Michigan State University anticipates the hire of a postdoctoral researcher in education to study two introductory courses in computational science education. The courses focus on teaching computational modeling, data analysis, and programming. The specifics of the position are being developed, but the researcher would work in CMSE on projects related to understanding student learning and engagement in these courses as well as be able to pursue their own research interests as they pertain to computational science education. The researcher will be supervised by Dr. Devin W. Silvia and will have the opportunity to collaborate with Dr. Danny Caballero, Dr. Brian O’Shea, and others both inside and outside of CMSE. There may also be opportunities to mentor undergraduate students in projects related to this work.

[Rumor] PER Postdoc, Seattle WA

A collaborative team of researchers at the University of Washington and Seattle Pacific University plans to advertise a postdoctoral research associate position soon, with a flexible start date between October 1, 2019, and January 30, 2020.  The postdoctoral research associate would work on a recently-funded National Science Foundation grant, "Research and Curriculum Development to Leverage University Student Conceptual Resources for Understanding Physics," which builds on an earlier project that ends this year.  The new grant will: 

• Identify university student conceptual resources for understanding kinematics, linear momentum, electric circuits, and heat and temperature
• Develop and test instructional materials that build on student resources
• Intentionally seek a representative sample of introductory physics students
• Study context-dependent patterns in resource activation
• Disseminate insights and resources from the project through PhysPort

The postdoctoral research associate would join a collaborative team that includes faculty Paula Heron (Physics, University of Washington Seattle), Amy Robertson (Physics, Seattle Pacific University), Rachel Scherr (Physics, University of Washington Bothell), and Raphael Mondesir (Sociology, Seattle Pacific University).  The postdoctoral research associate would be supported in choosing an independent and integrated strand of research and would receive extensive professional development that includes travel to conferences, mentoring undergraduate and graduate researchers, and other skills identified collaboratively.  Minimum salary is $60,000, with benefits.  The position would be for two years at the University of Washington Seattle.

Summer position for PER grad student in Washington DC
